Good academic books on mycology? 1

Really would like to have a more in depth understanding of fungi in general, and have had a hard time finding a list of recommended resources to begin learning from. Any textbooks or academic, science heavy literature suggestions would be super appreciated.

In my opinion some heavy hitters out there are: Moore, Robson, & Trinci's "21st Century Guidebook to Fungi" , Jim Deacon's "Fungal Biology" , Watkinson, Boddy, & Money's "The Fungi." Textbooks in general aren't cheap and these are no exception. There are plenty of academic papers on the internet as well as Journals like "Mycologia". Hope this helps.

My two personal favorites are "Mr. Bloomfield's Orchard" by Dr. Nicholas Money, which is a good beginner introduction to fungi and "Mushrooms" by Shu-Ting Chang, which is a good textbook that you can easily find a PDF of online. Paul Stamets also has a book about growing mushrooms that's pretty neat.

To be honest, you'll learn a lot better cultivation info from here than Stamet's TMC. We routinely correct the outdated info and techniques from that book on Mush Cult.

I also highly recommend this book. So much information for a very low price.

depending on what info you're looking for, for cult, Trad Cotter's "Organic Mushroom Farming and Mycoremediation" is a fantastic resource with many advanced techniques in it.
for understanding fundamentals about mushrooms and mycology, Bod's library seems to have some good books for that in it though I've yet to get around to them: Bod's Library

I took a mycology course that used The Fifth Kingdom by Bryce Kendrick as the textbook, and it seemed like a good general overview. It's 4th edition came out in 2017, and includes [somewhat] up to date taxonomic information.

entangled life by merlin sheldrake is by far the best book you could possibly read as an introduction into this art. its' fairly new.I would read that first.
Then I would go over all the youtube videos you can find on introduction to mycology.. there are some professors with really really good detailed video with basic fungi information, the radical mycology guy has a great video too. Check out introduction to biology and especially a crash course in dna while your at it -cliffnotes.com will keep you on point.
most definately, introduction to fungi by john webster and roland weber. that book is incredibly dense, you can't appreciate it as much without the first two sources i listed imo. It has tons and tons of amazing images, detailed introduction into the biochemical mechanism behind mycellium and how it all works; plus you'll understand the taxonomy easy.

There are many such books on the Internet. Just type in the query and you will get the results. I recently read free essay samples on professionalism, used https://studymoose.com/free-essays/professionalism for this. Now I would like to read the whole book. I would be very happy if someone could give me the title.

I really like this thread, and will check out some for the resources mentioned.
I would like to ask however, why is there so much hate for Paul Stamets on this forum? I have encountered it here many times. It seams misplaced as no one else has single handedly done so much in moving forward the mushroom cause than him (along side Rick Doblin).

You can do a lot of good and still say things that just arent true. People here hate on all the things he says that spread misinformation, but he preaches it with the same breath used to share the good stuff. Overall, the community moved past him.
Lastly, he speaks of scientific expertise he doesnt have, and allows placebo to dictate his advice despite the community generally recognizing it's wrong. Then people who dont know any better assume it's all true and have to sort it out later.
Personally, I like what he has contributed and dont mind the quirks that can be skipped over with good judgment and healthy critical thinking.

Its possible you are reading into it differently than intended. Stamets has been an ambassador for mushrooms and exposed a lot of people to the topic. He has really dedicated himself to the subject matter and shared a LOT of information freely.
but...
Written, published books can only give 'state of the art' information at the time it was printed, and people on these boards have dedicated thousands and thousands MORE hours in total to research and R&D combined than Stamets. It doesnt mean that Stamets is diminished in this regard, it means that if you want current, tested, factual information - frequently this board will have it where Stamets books will only be current to whenever it was published.
Also, Stamets has learned how to monetize his expertise. It takes a lot of time and effort to learn all this stuff and personally I say good for him if he can make his money. We all have to pay the rent. Earning money is never wrong. Some people think all this information should be freely shared. I understand that point of view but you cant fault someone for getting paid, but some do anyway.
I'd be shocked if you could find one person on this board that actually 'hated' the guy.

Oh, there are. while back Paul sort of "denounce" recreational use of mushrooms, stating it was giving the "science" a bad look and he went this serious academic route. He was awarded a Doctor of Science degree...
The grass roots movement of home growers, citizen sci and amateur mycologists whom once fueled his work(pockets) felt disenfranchised. Some poking holes into his work, asking questions...
Not sure how it is now, but "most" academic Mycologists didn't take to kindly to citizen science/amateur mycologists. They stubbed their noses. If you want a good example, head over to the Mushroom Observer and see how the academic Mycologists used to treat Alan Rockafeller. I hope it's better now days...

Thats wierd. Ive seen him discuss 'actives' in a lot of videos, from Rogan podcast to the one where he was making blue ice cubes for burning man.
I didnt realise he had changed his perspective.

Sorry my English sucks. Paul supports actives but not for recreational.
I can't remember the exact quote from the interview, but Paul was stating he didn't like the word "Shrooms" and Joe was like, I know, I know you are serious science guy.

Thank you guys for the comments. Makes sense. Don't let me hijack the thread from it's original topic of good books on mycology. I'll let you know how Entangled Life How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds & Shape Our Futures is.

I am searching for a decent reference book on fungi, preferable with some high level insight in fungal cell biology, metabolism and genetics.
Based on some comments here, the 21st Century Guidebook to Fungi by Moore, or Fungal Biology by Deacon looks suitable. I have an extensive background in molecular genetics and biology, however, as I have worked mainly on bacteria, I could use some lessons in mycology.
