Current status. The light seemed to make a huge difference with the cap formation.

The oval shaped "containers" are the bags with sterilized sawdust, woodchips & rye bran (Pics 8 & 9), all others (tubs & the jar) are coco coir & vermiculite (don't ask me about exact ratios - i just tried my best to reach field capacity) with a little bit of gypsum added.

Wow there’s a huge difference, the sawdust makes them fill out way nicer.

Sure they are - but you have to take into account that they contain more nutrients, but also need more ressources to make. The two sawdust-blocks are from the same culture and where merely meant to be a control-grow to see if the self-cloned culture is viable at all.
For me the 2 main advantages with this tek are that you can skip the whole substrate-sterilization-processes, which in my case means to fire the stove for 4hrs on medium-high for every 2 bags, because thats all that fits into my pressure cooker. And coco coir is much cheaper than sawdust/woodchips/bran. All my 6 tubs were spawned with just one brick of coir (+ vermiculite), each one easily containing the substrate volume of a standard grow bag. Today I harvested 5 of my 6 tubs (4 "normal" ones and the small one)and got 1245 grams out of it. I really don't think that the bags can catch up on that in terms of practicability vs. yield.
I'll see how the remaining pins and subsequent flushes develop, but as for now I think I will stay with the coir/verm-tek for King Oysters.
Oh - and last but not least tubs are reusable...

What I'm not sure yet is how a second flush will be induced best?
I thought about trying different "teks" for the second flush to learn:
1) do nothing and just give them one or two more intense misting, but otherwise keep on with my misting & fae scedule (slightly mist in the mornings and evenings; keeping the tubs closed during the day and open during the night) 2) dunking the substrate in water for a couple of hours, drain and go on as before 3) letting it sit for a couple of days and then try to flip the whole substrate block, like this guy suggests for doing it with bags: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqHkWCQHVA4 4) scraping the top and apply a fresh fine casing layer (this time i would go with just moist vermiculite)
What are your opinions on that?
The remaining question I'm not quite sure about is how I should deal with the undeveloped pins of the first flush? a) Leave them as they are? b) Trying to pull as much of them out as possible? c) Scraping the surface and hope that they will get reabsorbed by the mycelium?
What do you think will be the best way to minimize the risk of contamination?

Have you guys seen this major oyster grower in Japan? Did you see how they culled the pins in the jars, leaving winner kings.
I'm getting close to spawning KO to shoeboxes, 2-3 days mebbe...

For hwfp you don’t have to sterilize them. I did mine just the same as coir, pouring boiling water into a bucket. A coir sawdust blend is what I did for my shoebox and it colonized super quick like a few days.
I’ve seen people talk about culling pins but haven’t looked into yet. Now that I’m seeing how they work it looks like a good idea. So many pins. And the one pin I have on it’s own is five times bigger than the rest.

Yea - hwfp/coir mix sounds good! I might give this a try for the next king oyster monotub.
But as soon as a nutrient supplement (in my case rye bran) comes into play, i think steriziation is needed to avoid contamination.

Good advice - I highly recommend pruning for kings as well, they pin too much, if you cut all but a few, they grow much larger

Ok so after starting fruiting and then leaving it sitting at room temp for a really long time with nothing happening I put it back in the fridge for a few days then started taking it out during the day to put under lights. The caps came out of nowhere once it got light. Literally overnight, the cap was a tiny pin point then the next day huge.

I’m pretty surprised it’s fruiting decently after so long. I scraped up the surface a few days ago too.
Now to start a new much healthier one.

Well this ended up going so much better than I expected. Actually filled out decently I thought it was gonna be weird shaped.

You would be much happier with the results if you grew them on blocks in bags. Good job getting them to fruit but that is pretty poor performance for kings.

It's pretty normal for kings to have shitty yields unless you supplement the shit out of them. I don't think you'll get a lot better results from bags unless you do that. Like up to 40% bran is common.

That's precisely what I'm saying. When I say grow in bags I mean growing in properly prepared substrate.

Gotcha! Yeah their yields are crap for sure.

I recommend straight hwfp bags for noobs who aren't quite comfortable with grain prep or sterilization, but ak isn't a noob. He's definitely capable of pulling off some decent grows. Not that I'm shitting on your shoebox ak Just much more enjoyable to get the goods.

Don't tell anyone I said, but if you have a decent culture and spawn high enough you can get away with supplementing but not sterilizing. Shhhh! (NOT recommended of course, but sometimes I'm lazy)
