Micropore Tape VS Polyfil, With Particle Counter Fun! 2

I ran some test for funsies to see what polyfil and micropore tape could do with my particle counter. This counter sucks air in through the little collector on the top which I covered with polyfil or micropore tape to see how they preformed. I Had the counter running 20 second intervals here.
3 Ambient Air Cumulative Tests 0.3µ 16,562 15,206 16,222 AVG 15,996 0.5µ 2,765 2,283 2,828 AVG 2,625 1.0µ 851 631 743 AVG 741

Polyfil Normal Tight Cumulative Test 0.3µ 11,353 29.03% Reduction of average particles 0.5µ 1,742 33.64% Reduction of average particles 1.0µ 109 85.29% Reduction of average particles

Polyfil Extra Tight Pressed in with a Pen Cumulative Test 0.3µ 9,142 42.84% 0.5µ 1,076 59% 1.0µ 35 95.27%

Micropore Tape 1 Layer Cumulative Test 0.3µ 12,948 19.05% 0.5µ 1,856 29.29% 1.0µ 335 54.79%

Micropore Tape 2 Layer Cumulative Test 0.3µ 7,249 54.68% 0.5µ 465 82.28% 1.0µ 21 97.16%

On the "extra tight" polyfil test I used a pen to really compress the wad very tightly in the collection tube. It would be impossible to replicate that tightness and it was still not super good at filtering. Honestly I was pretty surprised by the results, I really thought poly would filter out much more than it does. And I thought micropore wouldn't do jack shit. It would seem that 2 layers of micropore is superior to polyfil. And neither are really that good. 2 layers only coming in at what would be a N50 mask if there was such a thing.

Wow, thanks! Great work dude, this is making me reevaluate my filter situation. I use three layers of MP but this is an eye opener for me. Wonder how well postal tyvek works.

It's good to note that jars don't have internal or external pressure sucking or pushing shit in. Cool test though.

There is definitely some pressure sucking air in at one point during the cool down of jars etc....
And when you shake/mix jars the media inside is like a big piston making a lot of compression and air flow happen as it bangs around inside the jar from top to bottom.
The fan on this is pretty weak Id bet it's sucking hardly 1-2 cfm.
Just a fun experiment nothing concrete but gives a general idea of their effectiveness.

That's true, explains why unmodded plastic lids work.

If anything I’d imagine the colony producing CO2 causes a positive pressure effect on the filter.

indeed.
And yeah, sandman, during the cool down... for sure. That's why I like to let them cool in the flow. (This is actually untrue. I use sfd and it's fucking bullet proof. I cool in the flow so i don't have to iso before rubbing one out. I used to cool in the flow for other reasons but don't use mp or poly anymore)

Gives another reason for putting foil on the lids, even if you use SFD. Even with pressure I don’t imagine mold spores do very well at changing directions.

I often look at spawn bags finishing colonizing with a bloated bag and think to myself....that filter never did anything I bet hardly any gas went in or out of this thing....
