Too much light for monotubs? HELP
    #26834954 - 07/20/20 08:31 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Hey all, I've been searching around trying to figure out if this light would be too powerful, I haven't found anyone using aquarium lights and I'm worried they might be too bright, these badboys are very, very bright. They are designed to light up a 90 gallon aquarium so..

I'm doing shoebox monotubs, and pointing the light directly at the tubs at full power. I do have a controller to dim the light if necessary. the light is capable of doing white, blue, and UV light spectrums, currently i just have the full spectrum going at 100%, all lights.

This is the light I'm using, I actually have 3 of them, but only using 1 currently.

Thanks in advance!

Dim it down and have it a good distance away. That light is pretty overpowered for this hobby imo. Something much smaller could get the same job done in a much more efficient manner. Just keep an eye on the heat and if it dries anything out and/or gets too hot, stay on top of it. I would keep it on full spectrum, but either dim it or keep it as far away from your tubs as possible while still providing ample light.
Peace

Right on thanks man. I only had it on just today. Would you recommend pointing it at the wall instead of directly at it? It is OP for this hobby, lol. But all I have at the moment.

Yeah honestly a compact florescent bulb or shop light in 6500k on 12/12 works just fine for tubs.

This is a picture from years ago but I used to stack tubs and stand up a shop light along the side of them

How many lux you measure off those (at the substrate?

I usually get 1500-3000 on mine. I use a combo of fluorescent led tubes and led strips

Im curious what those put out

I'm not sure man, I've never actually measured them.
They work out pretty nicely with vertically stacked tubs or above them on shelves though.

I haven't tried the Led floros yet

Thanks for the pic, I'd say my light is way brighter at 100% but dimmed down it looks pretty similar so I dimmed it as low as it can go and kept it at full spectrum. they seem to be liking it so far, ill post a pic in a few days and update

you don't need full spectrum. you need between 5000k and 6500k

Do you still use a light? I just use the bulb in my closet and it is really only used so I can see. I never noticed anything wrong.

Yeah, I either use those shop lights or a CDL. I have a timer set to 12/12.
