Grow log: trying to resolve low yield issue

Been growing since January and have settled on something like the SFF Shoebox factory with some modifications. I do six containers a week instead of five because the sterilite containers come in packs of 12 as do the jars and also why not. I also am not quite so exact with measuring everything. Perhaps not being 100% specifically perfect is the cause of my issues but that seems unlikely. I’ve been dealing with low yields and small mushrooms on the first flush since I first started growing. Right now, my shoeboxes are producing about 15g on the first yield instead of 30g as the trek suggests. In any case, in the hopes that somebody will be able to point out where I’m going wrong, I’m going to log my next grow from beginning to end.
And so begins our journey.
Tomorrow I’ll be getting my 6 jars ready but as for today, I just filled a gallon jar with 7.5 cups of raw berries and water to soak.

It's most likely unclean spawn or one of the modifications you made to the TEK. If you had pictures of your spawn and some tubs we'd be able to tell. If your fruits are abnormally small it could be too much water in the substrate. You can tell if your second and third flush are routinely larger than expected.

Interesting! I’ll try less water this time around.

Day 2:
Rye berries have been soaked for 24 hours, I drained the water and set some water to boil on the stove. Poured in the grain and allowed it to boil for 15 minutes. Afterwards, I drained and rinsed the grains.
I am using quart jars and I filled each one to the 24 ounce line. PC for 90 minutes and then turned it off to cool overnight.
This morning I brought them down to my mycology room, gave them a little shake to separate the grains and got my dish of Amazonian mycelium out of the refrigerator.
Tonight, I’ll add mycelium to my jars and stick them in my grow room.
Here’s an imgur link to photos of my jars. For some reason, photo uploads are disabled at the moment.

You say you’re not following the tek 100% and yet wonder why your not seeing the results? I’m not familiar with that tek so maybe it’s just a shitty tek. But assuming it’s a good tek, changing random things might be making it less effective.
Yield is the result of good genetics, good conditions, sufficient water supply, sufficient nutrition and axenic spawn. If any of those things are not well executed you may still see a crop, but you won’t see a stellar yield. I like to say growing cubes is easy, growing cubes at a high level consistently is not.

You gotta work on finding a good clone.
I rarely get 30g dry on the first flush of a shoebox. I use one quart of spawn and usually end up with 30-60g dry but over a few flushes. Now and then I’ll get a really good ms culture that puts out huge first flushes but normally it’s clones.

Interesting. I've been using the same 5 clones for a while now. Once I finish this grow, I'll look into getting some more spores. I've been getting pretty consistently low yields across different strains tho so I suspect genetics aren't my problem.

Oh I figured it was ms.
Start messing with things then. I spent my first few months making shoeboxes a bunch of different ways, wetter or dryer/more and less air, to see how they reacted.
It might cut into your yields for a bit but imo that experience is priceless. Definitely helped me develop an eye for stuff too since I would see something and know what was causing it because I had seen it in one of the experiment tubs.

Day 3
Gave my jars a good shake, got my Petri dish out of the fridge and sliced up three little triangles of agar/mycelium into each jar. When I first started with agar, I’d put giant slices and used the whole dish but that got me a lot of contamination.

The jars are now in my grow room. Environmental conditions are pretty constant in there. Around 75 degrees F and 70-80% humidity.

There’s a hepa filtered air intake that runs for 15 minutes every hour. Once I start seeing some good colonization, I’ll give the jars a good shake. Probably in about a week.

Day 8. Seeing some growth in the jars. Room is at a constant 75 degrees. Now that there's some growth, I'll give them a good shake to spread it around. I don't do it right away because then the agar always ends up sticking to the lid or the glass above the grain. No point doing that!

Day 19. A couple jars with contamination.

Perhaps it’s due to shaking these a couple times since adding in the mycelium (see concerns regarding my filters below). I suppose it’s also possible I need to improve my flow-hood technique, sterilization while innoculating the jars, or perhaps there was contamination on the Petri dishes I used didn’t see.
I’m starting to wonder about these thick cut up synthetic filter disc patches I’ve been gluing on and re-gluing on between uses. I think it’s possible that they somehow allow more contaminants in than the thinner SFD stickers someone makes and sells on Amazon that I’d started using before.
I also wonder if continuing to glue and reglue has led to some of them getting clogged, which would explain how a number of my jars, not included in this grow log, have started stalling. I think I’m going to switch back to using the stickers. They seem to hold on better between uses, less likely to clog or allow in contaminants.
