I completely agree.
Found my first ever shrooms 10 days ago. Once you've seen them, you start seeing the ruddy things everywhere haha! They're ever so distinctive aren't they? Always a smart move to get a few confirmations from experienced folk though.

Yup. First find was a few weeks ago and made another today. You definitely get an eye for which are right (and which are wrong). So far have had success in Wiltshire (today) and Shropshire (two weeks ago). No success in the Southeast just yet. Wondering if the season is just getting going there - and how much time remains? I hope there are a few weeks left..

After a dream first year picking last season, I'm having a nightmare this year! Was going to hit my safe spot this weekend but I've seen a fair few people posting magic mushroom map which seems to be showing anywhere with altitude as unlikely. What altitudes are most people currently finding at?

Healthy pickings this year, been wading through fields of them everywhere I go in Scotland. Is it a bumper season all over?

Third day of findings, loving it so far. Got 30g wet today so getting more and more everyday and today some of them were quite hefty too

My spot (North West Wales) is about 350m above sea level. I've been up there twice; the first time I found nothing, but I didn't have a lot of time. Second visit I found them, but not many. These fields have been teeming with them in the past.
I think, for the area I'm in, the season has been late to start. I think it's only just getting going here. The weather has been perfect over the last couple of weeks and the forecast suggests it's going to stay that way. I am hopeful I'll get a good haul in before the season ends.
My advice to you would be to keep looking. Maybe switch it up and try and find some new potential spots.

Maybe the map works in some areas, but it shows most of Dartmoor as having a low chance, which is palpable nonsense. High altitude moorland is best imo.

Ive been slightly confused this year down in the South East. The spot that produced for me early October last year has produced barely anything for me this year. Im not sure if its been the inconsistent weather but I’m only finding a solitary mushroom, no large flushes. Is anyone else finding the same as me and is it possible that the season will kick on later than usual. Heres one that I found anyway.

Yeah also in the south east/west (haywards heath) and I'm finding maybe one small family a day. I think season just starting here as they have all been high up. Hopefully frost doesn't come any time soon.

South East might start a bit later this year if my theories are correct about my area. It has been pretty mild through September and too dry imo. Let's keep our fingers crossed for a late, late show.
The ones I discovered at my spot were pretty small...Almost pins some of them. I got the strong suspicion that they were only just starting to flush.

I've found over the years, once a field gets heavily picked, next to nothing ever grows back and its best to look on moors and move on to other spots instead.

Hi Jny
I'm 64 metres above sea level and I started to find them here about 2 weeks ago. They seem to be fruiting fairly regularly now. Very hard to spot when they're wet though.

I personally find them easier to ID when they're wet/ fresh.

Hi, new poster here, been reading a while.
In the Lancashire hills, nearest town Blackburn, this morning, altitude 200m ish.
Last week virtually no mushrooms, this week I thought it might be better after colder weather and I was right ! Picked about 70 compared to 8 last week. Not exactly tripping over them but it's looking more hopeful for next few weeks.
There is nothing in this area in my usual spots below 200m.

That's a fair point. The striations are much more obvious when dark. And I guess you can do the pellicule test too when they're wet.

I'm genuinely confused about the South East this year. Temps have been ideal for a good while now. Ground sometimes a bit dry but not Sahara desert like. I've travelled high and low, from the North Downs to Surrey/Sussex... discovered some cracking cow/sheep fields (must've covered over 20 on Sunday alone) but hardly any fungi to be seen.
Glad I started growing cubensis earlier in the year - that's my no 1 tip to those not as fortunate with liberty cap finds!
