First decent haul of the season here in south dorset at sea level. Hopefully lots more to come as still very mild here. Happy chap as didn’t find any last year but I’m in business with a new field I’ve found, seek and ye shall find. I’ve seen a few posts about people giving up the hunt, don’t, keep going, it’s worth it !! Happy foraging people.

Has anyone ever had any luck on the South Downs?
It's the closest set of hills to me, and I walk there fairly often.
There's quite a lot of cow pasture and sheep fields, so it seems like it would be good, but any time I've actually looked I've found very few mushrooms of any sort.
Is there something about the chalky soil which is bad for mushrooms, or have I just been unlucky?

I've tried in some areas that I thought looked good on magicmushroommap, near ebo, but it turned out to be lacking; plenty of mushrooms, just no magic ones. I may have tried at the wrong time however, this week seems to be really wet so I'll take the train and look around some good locations. Mushrooms do prefer soils that aren't chalky but they can still grow. If I find a good spot and you're still looking (like I am now) I'll give you some pointers! The most essential things seem to be below 15 temps and multiple days of strong rain.

This was in South Wales, the only places I've found liberty caps in any numbers this year have been around 200m.
It was a healthy flush, I can only remember seeing 1 black cap and more than any one person could pick.

Hi Lauraq1
I'm fairly new to this myself, but they all look perfectly good to me.
Be sure to get some more opinions though please.
