Everything I've been seeing about Dartmoor this thread makes me so jealous haha! Insane and consistent patches. Is it one of them as soon as you see one and get down there, you see them ALL. Sort of situations?

Great conditions in Scotland’s central belt at the moment. Plenty of rain has lead to many flushes in my spot. More than the eye could see.. Picked these in about an hour this evening before the sun went down.

What about those two monster ones? Reckon they are safe to eat? Tempted to chuck them in the bin as I’ve never seen them that size before...

aye, they get that big. bigger even esp. in longer/rougher grass
i'd eat them tho would dry em 1st as not "young" enuff for me
i only eat very fresh undried to avoid those maggoty and gritty mouthfuls!

Sorry bud, not Liberty Caps. There are plenty of brilliant pics in this thread of the ones you're looking for.  Spend a bit more time on research and that will save you time when out foraging.  Best of luck!

to add a ray of hope, i'd probably guess the field(s) you were in had been picked and just those (some Pans, few dung roundheads other misc...) were left. maybe try same field(s) again in a few days nice n early?
also go next field, or one after, or after that and just cover loadsa, loadsa ground. its never a waste of time to explore

Todays haul (around 400ft, open heathland). Hiding away in the long grass, wet and difficult to spot but nice and big compared to last collection. Season still sputtering a bit but it gets better by the week.

I also found one of those interesting orange sterile ones:

good pics. hard to capture steriles well

Today's Haul. 200 Fresh Grams. Got some monster size ones in here. Same Location as my other finds. Just keeps on Flushing. Every time I go up for about 2 hours and get 200 Wet grams consistently. Good Stuff.

P.S. Just Check that Behemoth on the Top in the first Pic there.. Biggest liberty cap I have found yet, And I have seen a fair few Goliaths now. But this one is Something Else, Chuffed with that.

I've been out specifically looking for liberty caps a dozen times over the last 2 months. Not a thing.

Going for the last hunt on thursday after heavy rain is forecast for wednesday. Got 3 spots to check that are most likely, but if I find nothing then I'll be giving up for the year.

Have you found them in numbers at these three spots before? 7 or 8 years ago when I started, most of the several hundred I got for the season were from one fairly small area - one small field basically. I've never seen them there in decent numbers since. Since the heavy rain here on Wednesday (NW Ireland), I was expecting good numbers today, and it was the best day I've had for a long time. I had a quick check on that great spot of 7 years ago...nothing.

I suppose I'm just trying to encourage you to keep going, find some new spots, keep searching!

Lovely pics!

Just had a thought - does anyone on here ever eat their libs fresh - as soon as they're picked - or is it safer to always dry them first to get rid of any potential larvae that they might be hosting?

I'm a newbie and was just wondering about this.

Nothing beats eating them fresh on the mountainside.

Interesting, but they don't look like our psilocybe semilanceata friends from this part of the world. I thought I read somewhere nobody had ever managed to cultivate P. semilanceata?

Can anyone report about how it's doing around Bristol area? I was supposed to go visit a friend this weekend but can now only manage 1 night and day. Otherwise can go more leisurely in two weeks but would like to know how the season is doing to decide, in case now is peak time and not so much in two weeks. Thanks for any feedback.

If you've got the time to go out and look now I'd do that. Seen plenty of pics on here and other places of finds in Devon, Cornwall, Kent, Essex, Midlands all of which have similar altitudes. Bristol area won't be any different and you won't know for sure until you get out and have a mooch. Happy hunting.

Thanks! We've decided to meet somewhere between Bristol and W London tomorrow to go for a wander and avoid rushed Bristol sleepover. Fingers crossed.

Do people find that chalky soils do make a difference to lib prevalence?
