Got a habitat question. There are a lot of pastures in my local area where sheep graze. These sheep are hungry though and efficient in keeping the grass short. These are established grass lands. I suppose my question is are these good habitats? Or should I focus more on pastures with longer grass and sedge grass which I know can be popular for libs?

Both habitats you have described are ideal, check both the short and long grass in the live stock fields, both can be productive on their day.

Just get yourself out there, any mature grassland is worth a look and worse case scenario you have to suffer a nice walk in the pleasant British countryside

Be persistent and keep checking spots up until the hard frosts start, ive known them to still grow even after a mild frost.

Prime season for most probably won't kick off for another 2 or 3 weeks, so patience is key.

I checked my local spot earlier and a few indicator species are popping up so it won't be long now.

Good luck and happy hunting.

Thanks for the response.

Definitely going to be getting out and about a lot this fall. Been on a few hunts last couple of days already due to rain we had but understand the season hasn't really got going yet.

Been looking over a lot of old posts on here and a lot of people mention altitude as being important. Also people seeming to have more success on moors rather than your usual pastures. I live in a rural area, but not really at any altitude. Do you think I'd be better off driving further afield to Moor lands / altitude areas or sticking to local low land pastures with some hills?

To be honest I'm gonna look all over, I'm in North Wales in a few weeks near Snowdonia so hoping conditions are promising as can imagine good locations around there.

Seems like patience and perseverance is going to be key. I'm sure I will survive some lovely country walks with a few pub lunches thrown in for good measure.

Am I barking up the right tree with these habitats?

The habitat shots look perfect buddy.

As for altitude, its generally discussed as higher altitudes tend to fruit first, as the temperatures drop in those regions first, this is where your early season finds come in normally. Libs will fruit at any altitude really, just have to wait for the correct conditions, normally for a good week or so before they will fruit. But they will still produce, eventually.

Off camping in Cumbria now, so will be offline for a few days. Good luck dude.

Thanks buddy, enjoy your camping trip.

Going to spend the next couple weeks scouting potential spots I can check in on regularly as the conditions improve and temps drop.

Glad the habitats look good. I was a bit concerned picture one and two might be a tad homogeneous regarding the grass type, whereas picture 3 is more diverse. I have to travel for habitats such as the third picture however.

I checked my most trusty spot, so far nothing. I think it's still a bit too early, but as things have been feeling a bit more chilly I suspect they will arrive soon. Im also planning to check some sheep grazing land ive been looking at for a while, its a beautiful place and definitely well established lands.

Found a similar amount today in my usual spot(s). Started off finding a bunch but then tailed off... As I was leaving saw 3 others looking, so maybe my place is becoming well known. Pleased regardless considering the changing weather as of late.

Nice buddy. Can I ask what altitude your spot is? Just a whole lotta dung roundheads qand pans in the spots I've been checking. Don't think conditions are there just yet by me.

Found these today around 230-250 meters above sea level I have found another patch lower but very shaded around 130 meters but as I say the area is shaded and right on the edge of field next a fence with shrub shading it from behind the fence

Between 260-270m above sea level, though I haven't checked the higher spots yet. North West England climate is fairly good conditions generally at the moment, with some more rain kicking in.

Grass has been much longer this year though contributing to hard finds.. Not sure whether the sheep have not been on the field as long this year but it's very bushy.

Hi guys, can I please have an ID opinion on these found up on high ground? I feel confident about the smaller, grey-ish ones but the larger brown ones I'm not sure about. Any help would be appreciated

Hello good people! Went out for third day in a row and actually only my third time looking for mushrooms and I thiiiink it's gone well! First day just went around my local woods in greater Manchester, next day a trip up in the hills round Bolton. Nothing to show for both trips but today I went out to the peaks and I swear down I dunno if it was all feeling or it's all the research on the type of habitat they have but as soon as I got there I could sense the mushrooms 😅 found a lovely looking field with some chill sheep in and went for a wander... two minutes into looking I saw a few mushies around that weren't libs but I felt encouraged by this. So got down low to inspect a lil further and boom! Saw my first ever wild liberty cap 🥰 aww man was like a little child n it didn't stop was there for like an hour n never went more than 10 mins without finding a few more 😁 I'm pretty sure there liberty caps anyways haha. Could you folk  have a wee gander for us? Cheers
