I've not found a single liberty cap in Richmond Park (or Bushy Park) over the years & have concluded it's just a myth that they have ever been picked there!
The ground is still desperately dry in the South East. Wednesday could be the saviour for next weekend though.
Good luck all.

Hello, was on the south side of Dartmoor over the weekend, stunning. 2 of the 3 fields I normally use have been churned up and used for solar farms. Just out of interest are you finding libertys on the moor and near tor’s or lower level by jumping farmers gates in green fields?? Any feedback welcome, thanks

I've been up to my field in Dartmoor today, expecting to find a few, but only found one! Surprised as conditions are right and I've had loads from this spot before. I think maybe after Wednesdays rain they'll be popping. For what it's worth, I've only ever found libs on the moor itself, never on lower green fields. Happy hunting, we'll be in business soon!

I can vouch that there used to be plenty of libertys in Richmond Park when i first went picking at 15 - they literally did start shining and calling out of the grass the more you ate. However, that was 28 years ago and we heard in subsequent years that they had somehow eradicated them. Not sure how true or feasible that is. And, remembering how tiny we ignorant youngsters used to pluck them, among many, overharvesting seems as likely an explanation for their absence.
In any case, with the sensibilities of adulthood, I would feel too self-conscious/obvious/para to go properly foraging in such an exposed and frequented area now, plus much greater likelihood of dog poo contamination.

Anyone had any luck in Edinburgh area or have they started to dry up for the season? I've just moved to the area and trying to find some spots but any areas that have looked promising turn out to be empty.

I've recently moved from woodhouse eves (a small village in charnwood, Leicestershire) to Spalding, Lincolnshire. Where we used to live they'd grow everywhere, public parks, cemeteries, front gardens, back gardens, and of course the usual pasture/grassland. Where I am now I can't find a damn thing! Looking at the nbnatlas semilanceata distribution map it seems I'm not the only one struggling in this location. Has anyone ever found any around Peterborough/Spalding/and the surrounding areas? We have very little in the way of pasture/grassland as it's all used for agriculture. However, I refuse to believe that they're non-existent! Reading a past thread I did wonder if it could be a geological issue, as it suggested the chalk band running diagonally from Cambridge down to Plymouth was a factor in the lack of Libs, but that band doesn't reach us.... They start showing up around 20 miles west from where I am. So, anyone had any luck in Lincolnshire, not just this season, but ever?

Hey thanks man!! I had a good few hours on the moor Saturday as I thought optimal early conditions, found nada so headed lower and into green fields and still nowt. Last year was the first in many that I didn’t find a single Liberty after walking miles, mainly due to habitat destruction not happening again this year!!! Seek and ye shall find. Thanks for info, any luck my end I will report back 👍

Think after all this hot and dry weather we are finally going to get some consistent rain in the SE, I’m sussex way and it has been unbelievable you dry so had no chances. Fingers crossed

Bigshroommofo said: Hello!!! Glad to see your back at it hunting again. Unfortunately I still haven’t seen any signs of mushrooms in my usual fields. I went on a longer walk to figure out if the fields have gone dry or see if it’s the conditions, and throughout this woodland walk I saw possibly only 1 or 2 mushrooms in total which makes me really think we will have to wait a week or so. So don’t be too worried yet, think because of the unusually hot weather and little rain we are going to have to be more patient in the SE and our season will be shorter but this doesn’t mean we won’t get any. I’ll post it on here as soon as I find some so hopefully it will give a indication for a good time to look. Anyone else found any in the SE let us know!
Same here in east Kent dude. Checking every day while I walk my dogs, will be sure to post here when I start seeing fungi around.

Went for a hunt this afternoon. Me and a buddy found 2 shrooms between us and a few pins too in North Somerset. Plenty of other fungal life out there too. Slim pickings but looks like the season is about to get underway in the South, especially with the rain forecast over the next few days. Happy hunting everyone

Hey everyone, I’m new to this site. I’ve Been using and growing mushrooms for a while now but I’ve never been picking before. I am from Leicestershire myself in a rural place today me and the mrs went in search of liberty caps but found none. I think it’s a little early still and looking at the shroom map it also agrees. I really would like a few liberty caps so I can transfer their print and start growing this specimen. Is there any pointers as to when to go hunting and where I know it has to be fairly wet and below 18ish degrees and helps when it’s rained for a few consecutive days. As for fields I have no clue I guess a cow field or a field with manure in would help... is really like if anyone could point me in the right direction so I’m not just wondering fields for hours with no idea where to go thanks ale Every one

I was up on Dartmoor on Saturday and Sunday and got about 8 between the two trips. Found mostly on green fields lower down but some on the moors too!

Was in south of the Peak District on Saturday.
Found 20 odd little'uns but they were a day old and I hard to look hard for them in a spot which I know can bloom in abundance in the right conditions.
Still think it's been a bit too dry and warm in England but fingers crossed that'll turn in the coming few weeks.

All the low pressure coming in this week looks great. Surely got to get the season really going in England.

Liberty caps are notoriously difficult to grow from spores, they like grass to grow on so spraying a lawn with spores is as good as it can get. Manure may help other psilocybin fungi but for libs its not required. Basically that, fairly wet for a day or two, below 18ish degrees, old field, grassy hill, or short cut kept grass (ie golf course or similar).
Good luck, half the fun is just getting outside on a mission!
