So Pandora (Avatar) as a theme park is problematic
    #26836147 - 07/21/20 01:47 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

I mean... that's the coolest thing about that movie. The world looks fucking awesome. Big blue trees and bioluminescence everywhere.

Fuck yeah I want to walk through that.

The problem is that the fictional humanoid species is an obvious allegory for native Americans. Like the story is basically the same as Dances With Wolves except with blue people and a proxy body.

So you go to visit this area of Pandora as a tourist and that area is no longer inhabited by the native people. But they stress in small ways that they're happy you're here to fuck around in their land.

And then there are people (cast members) who come in and impersonate the natives and bang on their tree drums and shit.

:whoawut:

Um. Yikes Disney.

Well this was before they bought Star Wars and Harry Potter world was doing really well over at Universal. ...So that's why. They pushed it through because they said they would even though by that point it was obvious that Avatar was not going to be a long lived franchise worthy of its own fully fledged (very expensive) park.

I was always like hey that's cool. And I still don't think it's a bad idea per say. They just... this should not be a Disney thing where they pushed the universe no one actually cares about so hard. Because the more you emphasize that PEOPLE lived here the more you highlight their absence.

And the more it sounds like the allegory and all the really terrible capitalistic exploitation and displacement that happened in the real world version...

Maybe I'm thinking too hard again but also again Disney was the one that chose to highlight the blue people that were supposed to be in the world as you explore the park.

Should be giant animatronics the size of the aliens in the movie. :snub:

It really should.

I honestly think the lack of amimatronics is the worst part of the park.

Social commentary aside, the 4d avatar ride is absolutely mindblowing. I did it 3 times in a day. My 6 year old niece was terrified during the part where they put you in a room and explain the situation but after the ride was over it was all she wanted to do. All i wanted to do too, frankly. Best part of all of disneyworld

It's Disney.

They already have multiple sequels in the works.  Now, they have a park that will be open while sequels are being release for almost the next decade.  No telling the direction they'll go with streaming series etc.

If it makes money, it'll definitely be a long=lived franchise.

I doubt the sequels will do as well as the original. The original was ground breaking CGI with creative world building.

10 years later none of that is quite so special.

They made a whole park? I thought it was just one VR ride

My mom said that it was the best ride she's ever been on - the VR roller coaster avatar one

in animal kingdom they have a subsection that is all avatar related. a boat road, the 4d ride... i don't remember what else. those were both badass though. if you have an opportunity to low dose before doing the boat ride I highly recommend it. or even if you can't dose. it's really cool

Animal kingdom was always meant to be a 3 set park. The world of today, the world of yesterday, and the world of tomorrow.

When they didn't have the budget to do everything they wisely went with the world of today first. Then they added the dinosaur world (which is largely based on their bombed dinosaur movie so universal has them beat on that too. Can't compare Jurassic park to basically anything and I love animatronic dinosaurs to death.) and then later when they got the rights for Avatar they thought it would be great to put that in the place reserved for the future world.

And it definitely appeals more than their original 1950s ideas of the future.

Not that flying cars and shit aren't cool, I just think we've sat on that idea for too long.

Nah I actually love Pandora and I even find the lore really interesting. I just think they did it in a sloppy way that could have been easily avoided. Which is kinda typical for Disney...

It's the magic kingdom bro. You're gonna hint that blue people should live here but they don't and then also not give me an animatronic cat thing

And those costumes aren't even hard to make. The problem is they wanted it to make sense in the world so much that they couldn't have actors in costume because the blue people are tall asf.

Like if you wanted immersion I think it would be better to just shut the fuck up and let people explore the world and not mention the blue people. Lol

Or even have the entrance of the park start with some kind of avatar transition where everyone can roleplay that all the other people in the park are the blue people or avatars of the blue people.

You can even sell them blue people ears for $15.

Yes! I used to see a couple around town in FT WT TX in the early 80's. Lot of lakes there and they actually used them, lol.
