So it's been a bit of trial and error but things are finally clicking! The key to all of this seems to be dry straw casings that you spray/soak dialy. The straw won't contam in the open air! Also this will probably only work in Tropical climates. Anyway here it is!

4x 3lb spawn bags that were a mix of oats/straw/verm Spawned on 7/6 to 25qt lime pasteurized straw and 20qt steam pasteurized coir/verm/manure mix. Cased 7/14 with chopped unpasteurized dry straw. First pins 7/19!

Cool project! It's hard getting a scale of things from the picture, how tall are the mushrooms in this pic? Look huge already.
Are you doing this inside? Do you do anything to manage humidity like cover with a plastic sheet? Or is that what your comment about tropical climates is about?

They are in a kiddie pool! The pins are definitely already huge, some big ones almost like 2 inches and fat. This is out on my porch. During colonizing I corver them with poly covered in slits if the humidity gets under 80%, other than that they're always uncovered. If I cover them over 80% rh it gets too stuffy inside and cobweb starts growing. Uncovering them for a day will make that literally disappear though 🤷♂️ I also have a pool of averys albino and 2x 2gal fabric pots(averys and melmac) I just cased this morning. And a couple 25qt pan cyan trays I'm doing almost the same way. Heres a better pic with a bottle for some perspective and one of the whole setup!! The 2 small ones on the right of the pan trays are Ps. Zapotecorum and Ps. Semperviva.

@jcm Right? The variety is NorMel so I should have some wild ones! I posted a pic of my wild coast tray in the pan thread, I think I've finally gotten it right 🤞

I had really good luck with the same design kinda, same dry unpasteurized straw though. I used shade cloth, which cut the cobweb, but kept humidity nicer. This was in a desert environment. Really rad pool idea though, and would sure improve on how I tried it.
