Thought I might see 1 or 2 shrooms at this morning's spot check:  delightfully surprised to find a wee handfull

Anyone got any advice on this tub I've got going? As in, what to do next to keep it happy.

I used something like the Smoothie Tek, a slurry of stem butts and some manky shrooms I found, and I've also been throwing in stem butts as I find them. The wood chip was some I found... it looks kinda fresh, but had been sitting in a pile outside. I soaked them in a light bleach solution before using them.

It's started off pretty well, and there's lots of mycelium growth, but I'm slightly concerned about that darker patch bottom right - wonder if the mycelium may be dying there.

So what next? Do I just add more woodchip? Should I mix some soil in there, or perhaps some decomposed woodchip or mulch?

Hey tofts i've had a few going like this one. So far once they got to that stage I transferred them outside into a wood chip bed or washing basket sized containers with wood chip. I don't expect any results till next season or probably/possibly longer, or never... The one I currently have I might keep inside for a while longer to see what happens. I don't know much but from what I've read you have bugger all chance of any success in a controlled environment so outside is the way to go.
would also be interested to hear from anyone that's had success with this type of thing.

I am super keen to know more about this if anyone can recommend a thread.  I have some buts growing on wet paper towels.  Do I just mix up a wood chip and potting mix tub and throw it in a washing basket outside?

Hi All

im off to Ohakune for a couple of days tomorrow. and im interested what the shroom hunting is like?

Im not after spots (well......maybe), but I have spent a lot of time in Kune over the years but never looked around for shrooms. and any pointers or advice would be great.
what are likely to be found? is there much up on the mountain road, there's a a lot of beech forest, or is it too high/too cold and I should look more around town and the paddocks.
or the tracks out to the viaducts?

cheers

I may not have had anywhere near the dense clusters as seabreeze but I found this incredibly easy to do

I just started with a good sized square of mycelium that I cut out from a patch, sandwhiched it between woodchips, kept it moist but not soaking and waited for winter. Experimenting with different substrates may eventually yield the winning formula for getting those dense clusters. Probably also depends on the "strain" of subs, if ya'll believe that's a thing.

That looks pretty sweet to me. What's the age of this basket? I expect that if you get results they get better with a few seasons.

Those woodchips were fresh apple tree chips designed for smoking food. I was a bit surprised the subs actually took to it. Yes that was in a glasshouse, I initially used an old mini fish tank for holding the substrate so I left in the glasshouse so it wouldn't fill with rain. I wanted the subs to grow out the sides too though, so I cut the walls off the tank and put it in that basket. Just left it in the glasshouse out of habit.

I planted it in my garden at the end of last season. It initially had a nice little flush early this season but has since died off

Those are some nice wavey caps and very tall looking fruit HWP. Are you claiming cyanescens? I'd be happy if I got this out of one of my attempts. I guess for big harvest maybe a garden bed style is best

No, they generally don't do that. Not cyans.

I should have taken more pictures to document in better detail.

These are the babies, I watched them grow from tiny gold dots on the mycelium to this.

All the way to these.

A taste of the harvest.
