First Time Growing (kind of)
    #26814638 - 07/10/20 08:56 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

So I originally did a grow of P. azurenscens, BUT I didn't do my research and used a BRF grow on them and even though they colonized the jars they wouldn't fruit and that is when I researched that they generally grow in wood piles etc.
That being said, the cakes were pure fluff, looked perfect to the Google Image search of colonized mushroom cakes.

This time I'm doing Cubensis, as they are the easiest to grow. I chose B+ because I read that they colonize the fastest.
It took a month for them to colonize completely but no pinning. I waited a week afterwards, still nothing.
So I turned my fridge down to the lowest setting and put them in there overnight as the PF Tek says you sometimes have to do.
But here they are four days later still no activity.

I air them out at least two times a day and I spray the walls each time to try and keep moisture inside. Our house is kept at 72, but our room probably hits about 74. I only turned it this high for the mushrooms lol.

Am I being impatient or is there something I'm doing wrong?
I attached photos of my fruiting chamber. If I tip the chamber, water collects so there's definitely moisture.

dont need to air them twice a day, or mist them everyday.

Those cakes look dry. also, the tub looks odd, i see a SGFC-mono hibrid? are you following a tek?

Cakes really benefit from a dunk and roll at birth. And the “cold shock” is outdated info. Cubes are a tropical species.

You should probably dunk and roll them and also mist the cakes directly when they’re looking dry like that. Evaporation from the surface is a pinning trigger.

Roll them in what?
Warm water or cool tap?
Also, for how long?
Roll all  sides, or just around the actual sides?

Sorry guys, I thought I had this better researched.

How would I re-hydrate them?
I followed PF Tek to the T.
Vermiculite, BRF, H2O.
Bought a pressure cooker and sanitized them.
Inoculated them.
Kept them at 76F to colonate.
Refrigerated them over night in a bag to try to jump-start pinning.
Four days later is pictured above.

What is a SGFC-mono hybrid?

Thanks for your help!

:whathesaid:

its just that ive never seen a tub with those holes arrenged like that.
a SGFC is a plastic tote with holes equaly distributed on all sides. and a mono is kind of what you did, except with some minor diferences. it doesnt really matter, yours will probably give a good yield, they look good, but kinda dry which is easliy fixable.

as they said, a soak is a good way to get it done.my english sucks, but i think warm water is too hot, and cold water is too cold haha do u get what i mean?

roll them on verm after the soak, this will give them a nice pinning humid surface.

after that, just mist them when neccesary, not everyday. If its getting too dry, you might need to tape some air exchange holes for a future grow. Good luck buddy

Edit: ive heard different soaking times for pf tek, i have little experience in pf tek so i cant really help much. ive heard 2-8 hrs

Thank you for the tip.

I soaked them 16 hours, then rolled in vermiculite.

I looked better into SGFC and I didn’t have the holes on the bottom, that keeps the moisture moving up, so mine theoretically had the air just pulling moisture instead of dispersing it in the tub.

So instead of pulling everything out and drilling, I just taped over the original holes and now have to open it to air it out occasionally. 😬

So I took then away from the window because I was reading that too much sunlight can kill the mycelium? So I had them moved under my bed so they got very little light but still some.
I also dunked them for 16 hours then rolled them in vermiculite.
As well as, I closed up all the holes so that the chamber would stop drying out.

This is what they look like now. 2 out of 5 are pinning and growing, the other three aren’t showing any signs, but I have hope for them yet!

They look like they’re starting to stretch a little from lack of air but it could be genetics, you’ll know soon.

Do you have the cakes on a lid or piece of foil? Anything to keep them off the perlite really. Also normally the first advice is to keep the cakes as close together as you can so they form a little micro climate.

Yeah they need some kind of fresh air, if you plugged the holes you should unplug some or cock the lid a little to allow some air in.

They also like light, you just don't want direct sunlight burning down on them. They don't need light like plants do but they do grow towards it and it seems to make them healthier.

Does it negatively affect their growth to have them directly on the perlite? 😬
Also can I even pick them up anymore at this point? (Photos below)
Also, each of the cakes are within 2’’ of each other. I thought it was a little too close.

I’m going to be posting updated photos below, it’ll show how they’re going at each other.

Thank you in advance for your help!

I figured the holes were causing them to dry out since only after I covered them did moisture stay on the walls. Would airing them out every so often be sufficient, or should I still take a little tape off?

I’m posting some photos below of their growth, I would appreciate your further evaluation.

Thank you so much for your help!

So I had moved them to a shelf on my desk. We keep our curtains shut at almost all times, occasionally opening them. Therefore they get only a little light. I was opening them 1-2 times a day for air, and misting them only when it seemed like they needed it. As well as, the other three have just started producing tiny specimens, so I’m hopeful they will go to completion.
