Hi all!
I’ve been keeping track of my first attempts with agar and need the advice of the community again.
Here’s the swabs that are questionable to me because I’ve never done swab to agar and have no idea if this looks like what I’d expect. Doesn’t appear how I’d think and it looks kind of like cobweb almost but not nearly as fluffy and all over the place like cobweb usually is. I’m hoping these are healthy because I got the swabs from a friend who said he guarantee they are clean. He works in front of a flowhood and has the right equipment 🤷♂️.

Should I take a small transfer from the center area to clean this up or just toss em and start new plates up?
These aren’t all I have going, they’re just the only swabs I have germinating. I’ll likely sterilize my own swabs In the future and use a print I have left from a month or two ago.
I may take a few to respond but thanks in advance!

I would of taken a transfer a little earlier before it was overgrown, but it still can work if its clean. Pick the most organized spots you can and move to a new plate. Only then will you really be able to tell what is going on.

I’ll probably do just that unless someone else has other advice I could consider. I just thought it looked a bit to all over the place. The plates are only about a week old, they’re definitely growing but idk about overgrown. I’ve seen a few overgrown plates and these look nothing like those.
For germinating, I can see how you think this is overgrown, keep in mind I’m pretty new to agar so my mistakes are beginner ones for sure. I didn’t think it would be smart to try transferring until I knew if it was regular myc or not. That make sense? They got a little out of hand with the growth but I still can’t determine if this is clean myc or something else.
If anyone can tell me if this is clean or worth transferring to a new plate I’d do that. I don’t wanna waste time on these if they’re unable to be salvaged, id rather just start something new with a grain placed to agar or another swab plate.
Thanks a ton for the input!

They look fine for germ plates, I would definitely do a few transfers and see how they grow out.

I’ll do at least one transfer from them to see what happens. Hoping for clean growth
Should find out more in a few days. I didn’t think germ plates would look so fuzzy and non uniform. The growth is spreading from the spots I swabbed so I’d assume it’s clean but I like to be sure. Any more input is incredibly appreciated.

I think it depends how many spores germinate on it. If you manage to swipe a relatively low number of spores, or only a small number actually germinate, the growth will tend to look less fuzzy. With a large number of incompatible genetics competing, it never looks very good.
