Although I like my diy dehydro, I wouldn't mind having one (or 3) of those beauties!

I measured wrong on this one. The other has 10 trays instead of 9 Takes about 8 hrs to dry on high
Dont use a box fan. The motors burn out

Looks like you really cram 'me in there. 8 hrs, pretty freakin schweet! Put a big 3 wick candle on top of it, then the whole neighborhood won't smell like feet just your house. Haha

I actually love the smell of mushies in the dehydrator, idk what it is. I hate the smell of cooked oats, cooked coir, and dried mushies but when they are drying, mmmhmmm!
@Ted; Are there any issues with stacking them on the trays like that? i've always taken time to space each mushroom out (just so they aren't laying on top of one another, i still try to maximize space) with the idea that they would dry faster than if they were stacked. I guess realistically it wouldn't matter for me because i usually run the dehydrator for 24 hours since it works out really well with my schedule.

You know how noobs always find convoluted ways to not learn proper sterile technique? So, I've made this tool because my scalpel game is appalling. First two images are from initial testing/practice. Third image is initial results, sorry about the image quality, can't take good images of mycelium on agar to save my life, it looks real nice in real life. Need to make some improvements, but it's certainly easier and faster for me.

It's a spring loaded retractable core biopsy needle, aka air pump needle paper clip and a spring from a pen.

Interesting design. I like it, as I have been thinking about making something similar. My only question would be, with something as small as an inflator, do you have to have the whole thing and the hand operating it over your plate? I like to hold the scalpel back a bit from the blade so my hand is never over the receiving plate. I guess if you’re working in a FH it wouldn’t matter. Nice job.

Thanks Roscoe. tl;dr version: Nothing but the needle ever goes over the plate, the plate is angled at 45 degrees and the needle is perpendicular to the plate, I make sure the area I want to sample is closest to me so I don't have to hover over the plate. Doing it this way only about half the needle is over the plate and I flame the whole thing before I start.
Long version, sorry for the roundabout description, English is not my native language: The plate is held at a 45 degrees angle with that mesh metal stand I found at the dollar store, the plate is rotated such that the target poke area is closest to me. I hold the tool with my right hand like a pencil, fingers on the crimped metal bit, that little white button is held against my palm just below the index finger (turns out that area of the palm is called mount of jupiter, who knew). I lift the plate cover with my left hand up to parallel with the table, stick the needle perpendicular to the plate, slightly twist the needle with my fingers (required to pick up the sample) pull back and replace the lid. I then lift the receiving plate with my left hand, thumb and index on the lid, little finger on the bottom, I hold the lid parallel and allow the bottom to drop to below 45 degrees, I then core the needle and place the sample on the plate, again only half the needle is ever over the plate. To core the needle and expose the sample I pull my fingers closer to my palm pressing the white button into my palm and loading the spring.
Anyway, you can definitely make it with a long regular needle.

This Is what I been using for a few years now.
I got the idea from Josex biopsy method: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24740168/fpart/1/vc/1 Josex method was using a syringe filled with sterile water. The water was used to force the culture plug out of the tip of the needle onto a agar dish or a lc. What I came up with is this method, where I don't have to mess with sterile water. I use a flamed sterile wire ram rod. It's a 14 gauge 3 inch long blunt tip luer lock. With a wire ram rod.
The two tools can be flamed and cool down ready for use in a short waiting time.
I like doing multi punches, doing a few plugs at the same time and loading a few dish all in one motion.
The plug Is the diameter of one strand of non cooked spaghetti.
Here's one supplier that carries them. http://www.gourmetmushroomsupply.com/syringes-needles/sterile-needles/liquid-culture-needle-4-inch-long-luer-lock
You can get blunt tip luer Locks In assorted gauges all the way down to 25 gauge. A 10 pack assorted gauges 5 inches long will cost 8.49 on e-bay with free shipping. I would copy and paste the url but It way to long...

It makes good sense for your first transfer from your spore dish to take the smallest culture sample as possible.

Thanks, It's already pretty much ripped because I had a thick rubber sleeve over it for grip on and off which didn't work out in the end, but I'll cut it off like you suggest.

Mine is inspired by Josex's poke and demonic's punch tool and biopsy needles in general (look up EZ Core Biopsy Needle). I'm pretty sure Josex's method uses water because he doesn't grab agar, just a bit of mycelium and the water washes it out of the needle.
Do you have any tips for doing it this way? I've already noted how I have to cool the needle way more than I think is needed or the agar melts in the needle during transfer. I've also had a couple of duds, which I suspect is also too hot needle killing the tiny amount of mycelium.

The open lid seems like more of a concern I'm guessing it's in a hood.

Heres my josex inspired punches ... First one was this steam punk looking thing put together with super glue and various odds salvaged round house
Which recently evolved into this newer stainless steel version
