Buying a Motorcycle..HELP!
#26833637 - 07/20/20 04:54 AM (3 years, 6 months ago) |
|

I am looking for a motorcycle for a cheap and fun commute to work. I found a 2016 honda 300 i can get for 3k, may be able to talk em down to 2500..only thing is it has 80,000 miles on it.
This seems ridiculously high for a motorcycle and I dont want to buy it if its just gonna fall apart from high mileage at any time..
I found an 09 ninja 250r for 2k, may be able to talk em down to 1800, 6k miles...says its in good condition but needs carb cleaned.
Which should I go for?

Why a 250/300cc rather than a 600?
I'd get a Honda Hornet (a CB600F here I think) as an early road bike to learn on. No reason to not have a little more legs for when you get more confident (which you will, in time).

scared of the extra power and my lack of experience tbh..
i figure i can learn on a 300 and by spring next year I'll have the confidence to move up and ride comfortably on a 600..

I think lots of people make this mistake. It's not like you're going to get on it and go WOT straight away. You'll be cautious, no matter what bike.
Any fast vehicle can go slow too, and one only hinders their own growth by making decisions based on fear.
I really, really advise against going down this path of 'I don't trust myself!'.
Don't stunt your own growth, please.

That's a lot of miles in short time, you would have to double check the manual and see if all the mechanical milestones where taken care of which they might not have a record of doing so unless your a mechanic I wouldn't even consider looking at a bike like that.
My first motorcycle was a 150cc enduro and then after I graduated high school I sold it and upgraded to a FZR 600 and it wasn't much of a leap. I personally ride aggressively defensive as you have to because many times people look right threw you and I'd say a 600 has the minimum power to get you out of a tight spot but that's just my preference.

Exactly. One must learn to ride defensively as a biker IMO.

Do you already have a truck? If not I'd say get a truck. I never was a truck person until I owned one years ago. It is one of the most practical things you can own. I miss my truck

Hahhaa you got me there. I'm just putting my 2 cents in. A truck can make you hella money when you are down and out.....can a motorcycle do that?
Edit: and you can MOST DEFINITELY have fun in a truck ;p

One can have fun in any motorized vehicle, in the right environment.
However ones 'daily commute' will never be as much fun on four wheels as it is on two.

LOL no, because life is never as cool as it is in the movies. There were no flames and explosions, and I backed the truck up to a mound of dirt so it wasn't exactly a big drop...

Get a bigger bike. It will be safer if you just trust yourself and learn to use your weight. Just be on the gentle side with the clutch, practice on empty backstreets. If nothing else a smaller bike is worth less miles to you. Just like a 4cyl vs a V6 car. And just like that a V6 is safer especially where one would be entering heavy traffic. Cars are already going to scare the shit out of you and piss you off, best thing you can do is be at least a little faster than them. If you want a cheap, reliable bike that should be comfortable too, look for an old Honda.

These were my winter bikes for a good number of years, and both were fucking badass. Especially the VFR with the V4 engine...

I'd sell you my 97 cbr 600 for 1000 bucks if you were near me. Visually its a little rough. It tipped over after parking in some gravel once and busted up its farrings, which are replaceable. But its a strong strong runner. Needs new tires.
Got like 26,000 miles on it no leaks.

Everyone says get a bigger bike. Thats true, but preferences are subject to change. Like mine, i started out on 180cc, then went to 400cc then 650cc, kept going up until i reached 1100cc and now 12 motorcycles later im back down to under 200cc enduros, and i dont think ill ever bother with anything bigger again. I found my sweet spot for my current state of being. May change again in future

600 is really the ideal size, enough power for thrills but small enough to handle amazing. I mean they handle better than smaller bikes from what I can tell. I can turn sharper and faster on a 600cc then I can on something smaller.

True. Almost no one stays on something like a 250 though. I've never understood the point of starting out on one, unless it's a kid, or a dirtbike.
Fuck it, get a 900 and wheelie up and down the block. You're going to wreck anyway.

I want to join an enduro cult. Theres a fanaticism with lightweight street legal enduros, more popular ive seen in places like colombia and indonesia Its all about conquering every possible plane of terrain, strive for no limits on 2 wheels. It has to be light enough that you can pick it up out or drag it uphill out of stuck situations, and high up exhaust for crossing water

Go as new as you can afford, less maintenance issues.
Engine size is not as big of a deal as some would lead you to believe, with some exceptions. The smaller Honda Rebel types will feel small for most riders but they do hold their value when you get them used.
A great easy ride that can be had for cheap is a Honda Shadow.
If you have a over 3k to spend, a modern Triumph Bonneville is another great option.
If you want more of a dual sport, a Honda XR is another nice choice.
If you're leaning towards a supermoto, the Suzuki DRZ 400 is tough to beat, although you'll be more apt to get yourself a ticket on one of them, just too much fun!

Its tough to find 600s in my price range and area right now though, people are buying up bikes like crazy..
Another reason why i was thinking 300 until early spring, sell and buy a 6.
From what ive seen, i should be able to get all my money back, maybe even profit if i can find a good enough deal.

This. My current bike was the first new vehicle I've ever owned.
Cons: You have to get it serviced a bunch of times in the first 10k or so miles.
Other than that, it's great not constantly worrying about breaking down.

Depends on model year, a 2020 600 will smoke a 2010 liter bike (with a few exceptions). I started on a 600 Honda Shadow, think it make 40hp. 2020 Yamaha YZF-R6 makes 117HP and weighs 450 odd lbs...I know its a racing model just wanted show the difference between yesteryear and today. Most 600cc today make 100 hp and are not good beginner bikes imo. But you do you.

Make sure to change the oil before you put too many miles on it. Sellers notoriously sell bikes with low shit oil, dont ever take it to a mechanic just youtube all the maintenance to learn. Post in this thread if you have maintenance questions

I think its a great choice for a first motorcycle
Can basically do whatever you want on it
Here in Europe its normal to start on a 500 or 600cc bike. I took my lessons and got my license on a 600 fazer

In the USA they duct tape you to a Hayabusa and send you down the longest straight in the neighborhood, if you survive 200mph you get your license. If you die, you've failed your exam.

I like the decals myself.
Since we're talking about looks, how long until you get an aftermarket exhaust hTx?
Not only will it make you safer (loud pipes save lives) but it'll also add a distinctly.. sexual tone to the bike and the experience of riding it WOT.

Actually plan on doing this within the next month, unsure exactly what to buy but im looking at ex-500.com forums on the regular for advice.
.i changed all fluids, and i am going to clean and lubricate the chain probably sunday...but man, she rides like a dream! I am already addicted lol, first thing i did this morning was gear up, ride to a nice sized parking lot to practice uturns and turning...figure 8s and circles.
Then took to some back country roads to practice cornering and counter-steering..then a huge rain cloud came out of NOWHERE so i also got practice riding in the rain..
I dropped the bike yesterday on my way to work (very gentle drop in the grass), a wasp somehow got into my jacket and started stinging me at 80 mph. Took everything in me to keep my cool, pulled over immediately...where i stopped though was on an incline ditch, opposite my kickstand so the bike wouldnt stay up but i was steadily getting stung, kind of freaked out after the 4th or 5th sting and the bike fell over, to heavy on the incline for me to save so it kind of gently dropped on the grass..
ripped my jacket off, killed the wasp and COULD NOT lift the bike back upright..luckily someone stopped and helped me. Other than that its been smooth sailing. Been riding for like 8 hours so far today just waiting for the rain to stop so i can go out again.

One of the best things you can do is go take an MSF riders course. No matter how long you've been riding you'll learn skills that WILL make you a safer and more confident rider. Its been over 20 years since I took my intro course and I still use those skills to this day. Without a doubt they've saved my life as well.
I'd also recommend your first investment be in a good set of tires. They will help make your bike safer and improve handling greatly over an older tire. Purchase them from a local dealer and you can get a deal on installation.

Got new tires bout a week ago. Already put about 1500 miles on the ninja.
Found back country road with a half mile straightaway and have been working my way up to top speed.
Reached 125 today at around 9.5k rpm in 5th and still had another gear and another 1k rpm before I shift.
I bet it will go in the mid 130s which is suprising to me as I was reading people having trouble reaching 110-120. Will report back tomorrow when I finally push it as hard as it'll go.

I hate to be buzz killington homie, but be smart about going fast. It's so easy for shit to go south especially on a public road, not to mention when you're a newer rider. I totally used to do the same thing and got lucky enough times to still be around.
Once I started racing I quit riding hard on the streets. If you can find a good local track day and ideally a class for beginning track riding. You'll pick up a ton of skills and confidence and the best part is you know the track is reasonably prepped and safe to lay it all out. There's really nothing quite like dragging an elbow in a turn! No dogs or deer to worry about and there's always and ambulance there if you make a mistake.
I can totally hear the younger me telling me to fuck off but the older me just had to add a word of caution out of care for a fellow rider. Have fun buddy but above all be safe enough to ride tomorrow.

Thanks for the word of caution.. You are right, it is totally irresponsible of me to ride 100+ mph on public roads...especially as a new rider.
I don't have a death wish or anything, I make sure the road is safe before I go full throttle, there is hardly ever traffic and its a dead straight away near sea-level, you can see cars coming for miles. Obviously a track would be ideal and I definitely plan on doing a track day one of these days, however, the nearest track is 200 miles away.
At the moment, I'm surrounded by many multiple rural, long twisting backroads outside of towns with populations below 1,000. There are roads I've found where I didn't see a single car/truck, nothing over multiple hours...I understand what your saying though, but no worries I am very cautious.
I always do a few slow runs when riding unfamiliar roads, looking out for potential hazards well before I start to open up the throttle.
feels weird looking back how fast I've progressed.
the first couple days riding this bike, it was all very intimidating...I stalled it more than a few times, I dropped it my 2nd day...hell even just getting the bike up to highway speeds felt sketch as hell...it'll definitely get there (and fast) but I was not used to the wind hitting like it does when you start creeping above 65-70MPH, the pushback on my helmet and jacket was very alarming the first time I got up to 75...it felt SO fast and I became acutely aware of how vulnerable I actually was on this thing...
But then, idk...after a few days of practicing the basics, I became very comfortable on the bike... higher speeds and acceleration no longer freak me out, I find them exhilarating. The first time I revved through the gears at 7-11k RPMs, my mind was blown...I had no idea my bike could move like that as I had been shifting like a granny at 4-6k those first couple days. That pull. Man. That same day I came to understand how counter-steering works which also blew my mind...I could not believe I had been riding for a couple days already and did not notice counter-steering one time, despite my doing it naturally (all bikes counter-steer above 10 mph, its physics) the entire time. once i understood it conceptually, a whole new world opened up to me as my handling improved DRAMATICALLY. Now I just feel like I got this when I ride and have a lot of fun.

I swear man, that pull is the most addictive thing I've ever felt. I've never built up a tolerance to it, it's just as fucking cool every time.
I was fortunate enough to take a few runs on a pro stock drag bike at Gainesville a few years back. My R1 was blindingly fast but doing a sub 7 second 1/4 on a 400hp bike was a semi-religious experience. You're accelerating the entire run, it just never seems to stop pulling!
I'm stoked to hear you're enjoying your journey into motorcycling. It's a freedom so few are able to experience.
There's a youtube channel called Canyon Chasers. They have some great videos on sportbike techniques. Lots of useful stuff all over youtube on different track techniques that will help make you faster as well as safer. As the old adage goes, speed is a byproduct of skill!
