Buying a Motorcycle..HELP!

I am looking for a motorcycle for a cheap and fun commute to work. I found a 2016 honda 300 i can get for 3k, may be able to talk em down to 2500..only thing is it has 80,000 miles on it.
This seems ridiculously high for a motorcycle and I dont want to buy it if its just gonna fall apart from high mileage at any time..
I found an 09 ninja 250r for 2k, may be able to talk em down to 1800, 6k miles...says its in good condition but needs carb cleaned.
Which should I go for?

Why a 250/300cc rather than a 600?
I'd get a Honda Hornet (a CB600F here I think) as an early road bike to learn on. No reason to not have a little more legs for when you get more confident (which you will, in time).

LOL are you being serious??
I must've ridden upwards of fifty different bikes at this point and Harley's are the biggest pieces of trash I've been on.
Nothing more than a throbbing status symbol based on technology from the 1940's.

scared of the extra power and my lack of experience tbh..
i figure i can learn on a 300 and by spring next year I'll have the confidence to move up and ride comfortably on a 600..

I think lots of people make this mistake. It's not like you're going to get on it and go WOT straight away. You'll be cautious, no matter what bike.
Any fast vehicle can go slow too, and one only hinders their own growth by making decisions based on fear.
I really, really advise against going down this path of 'I don't trust myself!'.
Don't stunt your own growth, please.

That's a lot of miles in short time, you would have to double check the manual and see if all the mechanical milestones where taken care of which they might not have a record of doing so unless your a mechanic I wouldn't even consider looking at a bike like that.
My first motorcycle was a 150cc enduro and then after I graduated high school I sold it and upgraded to a FZR 600 and it wasn't much of a leap. I personally ride aggressively defensive as you have to because many times people look right threw you and I'd say a 600 has the minimum power to get you out of a tight spot but that's just my preference.

Exactly. One must learn to ride defensively as a biker IMO.

Do you already have a truck? If not I'd say get a truck. I never was a truck person until I owned one years ago. It is one of the most practical things you can own. I miss my truck

A truck is neither of these things.

Hahhaa you got me there. I'm just putting my 2 cents in. A truck can make you hella money when you are down and out.....can a motorcycle do that?
Edit: and you can MOST DEFINITELY have fun in a truck ;p

One can have fun in any motorized vehicle, in the right environment.
However ones 'daily commute' will never be as much fun on four wheels as it is on two.

LOL no, because life is never as cool as it is in the movies. There were no flames and explosions, and I backed the truck up to a mound of dirt so it wasn't exactly a big drop...

Get a bigger bike. It will be safer if you just trust yourself and learn to use your weight. Just be on the gentle side with the clutch, practice on empty backstreets. If nothing else a smaller bike is worth less miles to you. Just like a 4cyl vs a V6 car. And just like that a V6 is safer especially where one would be entering heavy traffic. Cars are already going to scare the shit out of you and piss you off, best thing you can do is be at least a little faster than them. If you want a cheap, reliable bike that should be comfortable too, look for an old Honda.
