If my belief is true that the exploits of the Bible (particularly the mass power of the Three.) I on one hand have comfort, o the other if there exaggerated stories find them cool stories that can still be used to honor God in some way, even if it's not true, it's a cool story and for thousands of years mass people believe it's a true story and God (with the belief that he is still real) is praised and honer, simply for having a cool story, is that fair? Do you think I'm confused and/or delusional?
have a look at the story:
Quote:
(NIV) 2 Samuel 23:
David’s Mighty Warriors
8 These are the names of David’s mighty warriors:
Josheb-Basshebeth, a Tahkemonite, was chief of the Three; he raised his spear against eight hundred men, whom he killed in one encounter.
9 Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite. As one of the three mighty warriors, he was with David when they taunted the Philistines gathered at Pas Dammim for battle. Then the Israelites retreated, 10 but Eleazar stood his ground and struck down the Philistines till his hand grew tired and froze to the sword. The Lord brought about a great victory that day. The troops returned to Eleazar, but only to strip the dead.
11 Next to him was Shammah son of Agee the Hararite. When the Philistines banded together at a place where there was a field full of lentils, Israel’s troops fled from them. 12 But Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field. He defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the Lord brought about a great victory.
13 During harvest time, three of the thirty chief warriors came down to David at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. 14 At that time David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem. 15 David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” 16 So the three mighty warriors broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out before the Lord. 17 “Far be it from me, Lord, to do this!” he said. “Is it not the blood of men who went at the risk of their lives?” And David would not drink it.
Such were the exploits of the three mighty warriors.
18 Abishai the brother of Joab son of Zeruiah was chief of the Three. He raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed, and so he became as famous as the Three. 19 Was he not held in greater honor than the Three? He became their commander, even though he was not included among them.
20 Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, performed great exploits. He struck down Moab’s two mightiest warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. 21 And he struck down a huge Egyptian. Although the Egyptian had a spear in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear. 22 Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada; he too was as famous as the three mighty warriors. 23 He was held in greater honor than any of the Thirty, but he was not included among the Three. And David put him in charge of his bodyguard.

The Wisdom and Poetry books of the Old Testament are good reads, and i've read them many times, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs (Song of Solomon), even if you don't believe the story or details of the Bible, if you're just interested in some Wisdom and Poetry that's Ancient and Classic, give each of these books a chance, it may give you a more positive view of the Bible.
this Psalm stuck out as I was looking for another defferent Psalm:
Quote:
Psalm 82 New Revised Standard Version Psalm 82
A Plea for Justice
A Psalm of Asaph.
1 God has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods he holds judgment: 2 “How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? Selah 3 Give justice to the weak and the orphan; maintain the right of the lowly and the destitute. 4 Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”
5 They have neither knowledge nor understanding, they walk around in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
6 I say, “You are gods, children of the Most High, all of you; 7 nevertheless, you shall die like mortals, and fall like any prince.”[a]
8 Rise up, O God, judge the earth; for all the nations belong to you!
Footnotes [a]: Psalm 82:7 Or fall as one man, O princes
I was originally looking for a particular Psalm about God not helping the Jewish people, how there enemies destroyed Jerusalem and how the victim of this Psalm claimed they didn't forget Gods name, nor did the raise there hands to foreign Idols, they did no great wrong, yet God would not go out with there armies, lets them be killed, plundered and the holy thing of the land destroyed, aswhell as mocked, I couldn't find this very Psalm in my brief look, but the 3rd book out of 5 in Psalms has many sad stories of God not helping them when attacked, it crushes my heart hearing there pleas for forgiveness and help, a hard read for me, it makes me feel in the bigger picture the winner or loser in wars are free to decide who will win, yet God makes some decision,,,remember now, the war on Iraq was a holy war, for President George W. Bush said God told him to go to Iraq, make of that what you want...

I found the Psalm I was looking for about God not helping the Israelites:
Quote:
Psalm 44 National Lament and Prayer for Help To the leader. Of the Korahites. A Maskil. 1 We have heard with our ears, O God, our ancestors have told us, what deeds you performed in their days, in the days of old: 2 you with your own hand drove out the nations, but them you planted; you afflicted the peoples, but them you set free; 3 for not by their own sword did they win the land, nor did their own arm give them victory; but your right hand, and your arm, and the light of your countenance, for you delighted in them.
4 You are my King and my God; you command[a] victories for Jacob. 5 Through you we push down our foes; through your name we tread down our assailants. 6 For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me. 7 But you have saved us from our foes, and have put to confusion those who hate us. 8 In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever.Selah
9 Yet you have rejected us and abased us, and have not gone out with our armies. 10 You made us turn back from the foe, and our enemies have gotten spoil. 11 You have made us like sheep for slaughter, and have scattered us among the nations. 12 You have sold your people for a trifle, demanding no high price for them.
13 You have made us the taunt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those around us. 14 You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. 15 All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face 16 at the words of the taunters and revilers, at the sight of the enemy and the avenger.
17 All this has come upon us, yet we have not forgotten you, or been false to your covenant.[c] 18 Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps departed from your way, 19 yet you have broken us in the haunt of jackals, and covered us with deep darkness.
20 If we had forgotten the name of our God, or spread out our hands to a strange god, 21 would not God discover this? For he knows the secrets of the heart. 22 Because of you we are being killed all day long, and accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
23 Rouse yourself! Why do you sleep, O Lord? Awake, do not cast us off forever! 24 Why do you hide your face? Why do you forget our affliction and oppression? 25 For we sink down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. 26 Rise up, come to our help. Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love.
Footnotes [a}: Psalm 44:4 Gk Syr: Heb You are my King, O God; command : Psalm 44:14 Heb a shaking of the head [c]: Psalm 44:17 another translation has "or spead out are hands to a foreign God"

Not particularly pertinent to your post, but I came across this recently, and thought it was interesting.
The "philistines" they were driving out, were likely Europeans.

Would God really sanction the wholesale destruction of a people? That is, after the New Covenant through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Pretty sure he said that because it just sounded cool / he (or someone) thought it would lend more credence to the reasons for his actions.
