I am in love with ariocarpus. It might be more accurate to say that i am Stalking ariocarpus online and we have never actually met. I used to feel this way about Lophophora. But ive had lophophora in every possible position for 10 years and we have many children. Lophophora is willing to have an open relationship.
I am in Canada I have looked around and established plants are rare, and so expensive. I am going to have to buy seeds and start at square one. I am also infatuated with Aztekium and some astrophytums. They are the chubby, redhead, submissive, goth unicorn of the cactus world.
I have not been active on the boards in quite some time. I was here alot back in my grafty days, i think losing 95% of my cacti collection 11 years ago in a heating failure in winter killed my light. But I'm gonna get it back. Anybody want to start a friendly group of competition/collaberation with the cultivation of these sexy, expensive, cacti here in the garden?

I hear you on so many levels.
My 9 year old seed-grown L. williamsii are still my pride and joys but recently I've been really wanting to expand my collection. I literally just started 20+ different cactus varieties from seed. But no ariocarpus. I may have to make another seed order.
I'm also drawn to "goth" cacti. Another one I almost started was Gymnocalycium occultum. The name alone is goth. Here is a pic of what they could look like:

I ended up deciding against it because when you look at other pictures of this species most seem to look much plainer. Plus, my list of cactus wants is so long. It's still on my maybe list.
I also haven't been active here in quite some time - But i've always loved the knowledgeable cactus people you find in the Ethnobotanical Garden. Let me know if you ended up starting any seeds this year. I wish I saw your post earlier. A friendly group grow sounds fun.

It doesn't look like much at this point but I am gradually adding succeeded grafts of Ariocarpus seedlings! like - Trefinger x Loydii latus variegata - Cauliflower Hybrid x Godzilla variegata
so fingers crossed!
I feel or felt the same as you guys.. also started almost all from seed and got mostly Tricho and Loph at first, then focusing more on Lophs cause I love em and Trichos don't really grow all too appealing under my indoors conditions (cabinet with LED etc).. Then also added species which may eventually give a remote chance of hybridizing with Lophs.
But Ariocarpus has such amazing rugged aged looking cultivars, its amazing. And I prefer that squat or globular stuff more than spines and columns. Astrophytum asterias also has surprising cultivars, some look nothing like the original..
Anyway good luck and happy growing, hopefully my grafted Arios dont keep as reluctant as they now seem at first.
