Sterile lab checklist

If one theoretically had a decent budget and about 500 sfqt with 2 small offices, what would your lab look like?
Would these be the "must haves":
Laminar flow hood desktop 20l autoclave (sterilization of tools, LCs, etc) standing autoclave 100l (grains) fridge with windowed door
What else should one consider?
Thanks!

Check out Meyer's Mushrooms, he's always posting videos about the machines he builds or adapts. Especially would recommend looking at his system for filling grain bags and adapting a broken dryer to make a spawn bag tumbler. Those two could save you a ton of time! If you have any questions you can talk to him directly, he's very helpful towards DIYers. Also the folks over in Gourmet and Medicinals sometimes have these commercial sort of machines.
Good luck!

Also is there a preference over vertical vs horizontal laminar flow hoods?

What you have is the essentials besides "burnables" (things I burn through) like agar, petris, etc.
As for other things I would want but dont necessarily need:
I would get some nice stainless steel lab tables on casters. A few wire shelving units to hold jars and bags etc. Build a steamer for sawdust blocks if your intention is to do edibles at all. Impulse sealer for bags Cement mixer. I use one to mix up sawdust subs and they work amazingly.
Comfortable rolling lab chair. This is a must, yo!!!

A water bath to keep agar pourable was my favorite upgrade recently.

A few essential non disposables.. lighting and a decent magnetic stirrer for LCs. Maybe a temp gun (thermometer) to help with agar pour.

If you are doing pans a rice cooker set to keep warm to pasteurize sub makes it mindless and effortless. Props to JOC on that one.

Quote:
Choose a horizontal laminar flow hood if:
-Your application requires less turbulence on the work surface - While both horizontal and vertical produce very little turbulence, horizontal may render slightly less as the airflow does not hit any obstruction until exiting the fume hood (as opposed to the vertical flow hitting the bottom of the unit). -You will be using primarily small utensils and equipment that will not cause airflow disturbance -Large equipment within the path of horizontal airflow may cause greater turbulence. -You need the most control over contamination. Hands and gloves are positioned downstream of the sample in a horizontal flow, therefore greater contamination protection is possible with horizontal laminar flow.
Choose a vertical laminar flow hood if:
-Your application necessitates large equipment be used on the work surface - Vertical flow does not produce as much turbulence when hitting large items within the flow, as opposed to the disturbance created in a horizontal flow. -Your application requires that soldering fumes or fine powders be used - Soldering vapors can be toxic due to the presence of metal oxides and acidic fumes from flux. Only use laminar flow hoods for handling non-hazardous powders or nuisance odors being generated on the work surface. -You need a taller, larger work space - Because the filters are generally positioned on top of a vertical laminar flow hood, there is greater height available for work surface.

Great snippet El Chupa, thank you. So for mycology a horizontal is likely the better option. Mainly for agar work and grain bag inoculation. The grain bags are the medium/large 6lb so placing a bunch in the flow hood and cabinet may cause a lot if turbulence?

I'll preface this with, I'm still learning a lot and my work history is in factories and self employment lol. With that said I believe that really anything in front of the flow causes turbulence but that's not a worry as long as your technique is solid. Anything that is being opened and worked on is farthest upstream and the turbulence it creates is downstream. If I'm mistaken in anyway then it'll be a learning lesson for me as well.

Yes i figured to placing work flow starting in the front of the hood make rotating forward as you go along makes the most sense. Thanks!

You cannot have a sterile lab [β]
Done
You need a still air box and a table. Anything else is just nice convenience

I'd start off with a PC, SAB, and the essentials for agar work initially until you know it's something you really enjoy. All of the equipment you have listed (assuming it's quality equipment) will run in the thousands altogether. But you can get started with a couple hundred easily. If you already have a good bit of experience with mycology and know it's something you wanna dump a good bit of cash in, then ignore me.

Hi Guys. I do have some experience with SAB, sterile tek, etc. I just want to take it to the next level with ease of use and convenience. I am, as always, still learning. I do appreciate the responses so far. We are looking to scale with gourmet edibles as well so i figured I better get comfortable in a lab. I have a small budget of about $5-7k.

Lol. But realistic. My lab for 80% of my mushroom growing was a living room table and plastic tub. Some gloves and rubbing alcohol.
You know people who need to buy the same running shoes Olympic athletes use before trying running out. Vs I go for a run in jeans and work shoes people.

is that the thing they keep lemonade and juice circulating with in the food court at the mall? Does it keep the agar hot? This sounds awesome.
