what causes stacking and trails in the psychedelic mind state(s)
an artist laboriously recreates the effect noticeable on psychedelics to varying degree (dosage dependent) in which previous moments are sustained, enriching the sense of what is happening.
it may not be his intention to support this idea, but he did a great job

I think that maybe multiple frames of visual input that are normally supposed to come one after the other are instead presented to the brain simultaneously. Maybe some inputs get delayed and end up happening at the same time as others, or maybe some are repeated.
I think it has to do with errors in timing, areas of the brain that are normally highly coordinated instead start presenting things in the wrong order or at the wrong time, or taking too long to do their things with results appearing after they should have appeared. I think the systems that are normally highly coordinated instead start working much less coordinated and sometimes out of order. But that's just a guess.
You ever noticed that the trails/afterimages are distorted compared to the original?
I'd also like to know what causes the kind of echoes you see sometimes. Like, if you're looking at text, it might look like the text is kinda repeated behind itself over and over, or if you see a single line, it looks more like: ||||||||||| going off into the distance.
Maybe the echoes and the trails/stacking/afterimages are related.

I think the older frames are still there 'cause they fade more slowly. things linger and stack up where they are overlapped things become richer but more sloppy/distorted

I think it’s a building up of the images. I believe this is why colours become much richer, because the images are being overlaid one each other.
But why do we see this? I sometimes think it’s because the brain is working so much faster, and hence the time dilation effects.
So as we can process 1000x more thoughts than when not tripping, we can also process individual frames of images; like watching a movie in slow motion and you get to see the individual frames.
Just my random thoughts! Take care DJ Ed

if mental forms fade more slowly you get that effect, I think the psychedelic drug extends the duration of all signal pulse trains in the brain based upon dose. (*)
with no drug (or emotional trigger) a sensory or thought signal pulse train burst normally lasts 1/15th of a second after it spikes.
(we hardly notice any steps in projected film at 20 frames per second: mind holds the flashed frame just a bit longer than 1/20th of a second enabling the illusion of moving pictures)
add psychoactives and the trail extends till it reaches ~3 seconds (up to 45 layers are possible), any longer and you cannot discern form at all - white out or blackout occurs.
that's my take.
(*- in areas of the brain where the receptors for the particular drug are prevalent - enabling slightly different psychedelic drug effect spectra - eg. more visual, more auditory, more sensual, more cogitive, etc.)
