Depending on the forest floor conditions, the caps should be a bit darker on the ground. Although once plucked, it will turn lighter. The gills should also be purplish brown, almost black.
The most importantly, the stem feels very firm compared to other similar looking mushrooms. Almost like pinching asparagus stem of similar thickness. The appearance of the stem is very similar to the one you have on your hand, only that subs are white with very slight blue tinge and not brown tinge. The butts are slightly askew, not straight.
Good luck and never eat anything before checking with an experienced hunter or obtaining confirmation here.

You will know when you find legit subs - those the colour is wrong and from my experience they also feel wrong also.
Subs have a rubbery cap and have blue flecks. Those definitely have orange flecks. Once you get a few finds under your belt you will see the fine details. Just keep hunting and don’t eat any weird shit.
You are on the right track - the habitat is correct, you may find subs growing next to that species. One of my patches has a massive amount of those with a smaller sub colony intertwined - just gotta be doubly careful in that case - don’t get any orange shit mixed in!
