The vaccine is progressing rapidly. If we wait just 5 more months, we'll probably just be able to vaccine everyone. A lost year sucks, but the vaccine is so close that it might be silly to reopen when we could just wait a little bit longer. It would suck to have people die when we're months away from a vaccine.
Don't get me wrong, I actually want schools to reopen ASAP, but the vaccine is progressing much more rapidly than I would have anticipated.

Here's a random one I just googled.
https://fsph.iupui.edu/coronavirus/covid-19-random-sample-study.html
>After analyzing the results of Phase 2 testing in comparison to the results of the first phase that took place in late April, IUPUI researchers determined that the statewide estimate for active infection rate was 0.6 percent -- a sharp decrease from the 1.7 percent observed in Phase 1. The estimate for antibody positivity in Phase 2 was 1.5 percent -- an increase from 1.1 percent in the Phase 1 results.
It just doesn't seem productive to place restrictions intent for places like NYC, on people in Indiana where they're not piled on top of each other and cramming into subways.
Public transport is a problem. Population density isn’t really as important as you’d think. In ways the virus would have an easier time ravaging a rural town than a big city.

Who cares who “wins the race” what a stupid way to think about it. Successful vaccine technology will be shared.

I just read this article today, about how Russian hackers are trying to steal research, which begs the question, why isn't it just publicly available? The obvious answer being, that whoever develops it is going to profit massively.

Nobody is going to care about patents. I doubt the first vaccine will even come out of the US.

I mean, it seems like they care about it now, otherwise, research would just be shared, right?

Still empty hospitals here probably hasn't hit us yet or something

I'm probably going to keep my 4 year old home from preschool. It breaks my heart.
