For many years of my life, yes.
It is not a sustainable habit.
I don't recommend it.

Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. No. I'll have a drink like once or twice a month to shamelessly change to a good mood though. Since caretaking for family with dementia problems sometimes it necessary. Super bad habit lol

My heart goes out to you anon. I strongly advise you to seek professional help - it's out there. At a minimum, there is AA. At most, you can talk to your Dr. and/or seek out a mental health professional.
Drinking to fall asleep or to avoid nightmares is not typical nor a healthy approach to healing whatever underlying trauma you must be struggling with.
Sending positive and healing vibes your way stranger.

I've heard a sleep specialist on a podcast saying that going to sleep drunk prevents you from having REM sleep (rapid eye movement) which is dream sleep. Apparently the brain takes note when it misses REM sleep and will try to make up the dream state the next time your sober.
Going to bed drunk to avoid your nightmares. May infact be compounding for a terrible dream when you do go to sleep sober.
Just a thought. Wishing you all the best

It is. It’s a trap. Don’t do it, especially if you are trying to avoid nightmares

Personally havent had nightmares since I was a child. I dont know why. My dreams are usually blank and I dont remember them or they are fuzzy and make little sense.
I did drink to sleep a lot though. You just slowly become dependant. Best to not drink to sleep at all.
Nightmares though? I'm not sure what to do I would suggest therapy.
My horrible visions and thoughts come while I'm awake. I dont know which of the two of us have it worse. I would love to be able to erase my mind of some of the shit I've seen. I'm suffering there with you bud. There is power in knowing youre not alone bud. Its not very strong but its a crutch.
I dont know whats causing these nightmares for you but I assume youve been through some shit. And I'm sorry youve gone through that shit
Sending good vibes. Much love.

I use a variety of downers to sleep. I've always had extreme insomnia though.
OTC sleeping pills (doxylamine, diphenhydramine) = 4/10 Prescribed Z-drug sleeping pills (Ambien, Lunesta) = 5/10 Alcohol on its own = 4/10 Alcohol + OTC sleeping pills = 7/10 Benzos alone = 8/10 Benzos + sleeping pills = 9/10
I've never really gotten properly drunk to sleep. At that point, I no longer care about sleeping/how tired I am at work the next day, lol. I'll use one or two of those tall beers.

From 2009 to 2018 if I wasn't working or sleeping I had a beer in my hand. I would drink all day every day, sometimes only getting 4 hours of sleep a night and I always caught my second wind. Then the weight gain started. The lack of self esteem, suicidal tendencies, self loathing...
Then the anxiety started. I'd wake up with a constant feeling of terror that wouldn't go away. Like that feeling you get when you're almost in a car accident, but constant and relentless.
Stop now. Like stop yesterday. It's not worth it and like JSB said, it's not sustainable.
Right now I'm doing monthly psych phone meetings, taking Wellbutrin, and a scoop of kratom every day before work. I also hit the gym almost daily for anywhere from 3-10 miles on the elliptical. I feel fucking fantastic and I'm finally in the dating world again.
Get off the booze, man. Trust us on this one.
