Milo Grain Bag - Contamination or normal?
    #26827440 - 07/16/20 05:12 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

First time grower, really thought I had things going in the right direction. I can't find good pictures of Milo/Sorghum contaminated at this stage so if anyone can help me identify this without cutting open to have a sniff, I would appreciate it. I am most concerned about the bag on the left in all pictures. Dates are 7.9, 7.12, 7.13, and 7.16.

These were inoculated on 6.17, putting me at 29 days. On June 3rd, day 16, all three bags had the mycelium broken up and distributed throughout.

Edit: Additional Information added.

The color change was so gradual, I initially just through it was the grain being taken by the mycelium, but now I am unsure.

Ok, just an update for those who checked in. I still do not know what caused the black grain - maybe the grain changes color the longer it is exposed to a damp environment. Anyways, I decided to gamble and mix up the bags a 2nd time against most advice on the forum. The result - 4 days after mixing the first bag, it is completely colonized and the black grain is gone. I've since moved this bag to FC, and it seems to be taking off like the first bag and first FC.

The bag I mixed was compared to the third and final bag, which I did not mix. In 4 days the bag I mixed was recovered and moved into FC. The control, the bag which was not mixed, did not see much progression in the black spot during the 4 day term. So, with the good results of the first bag behind me, I decided to mix the third bag.

Now it is on Day 4 and the bag has completely recovered. I will be moving to FC this evening.
