Safe for G2G?
    #26827245 - 07/16/20 03:44 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Hey just so these jars heave been going for a while now and are in the home stretch probably about 85%. My question to you is is the mycelium healthy enough to transfer via G2G? Jars were inoculated from a fully colonized agar plate that had clean growth and was just about to pin I do realize that mad these colonize significantly slower. For some reason the myc just looks whispy in a sense, after full colonization I plan to let the masters consolidate. What do you guys think this is my first ever attempt at G2G and I want it to be done correctly without losing 20+ jars. Thank you in advance the advice is much appreciated!

I always shake it 2 days before G2G to see if they're healthy.

Like he said above I would just give them a shake. They'll be colonized by the time they recover.

It's best to use your spawn as soon as you can, there is no reason to "consolidate" grain spawn (or bulk substrates) like in PF Tek.

I don't let my plates colonize fully, I let them grow out 2/3rds of the way or so and then store in the fridge if needed.
If you look in these pics of this oyster culture below you can sorta see (bad photos sorry) how the myc grows way up the walls of the plate and starts trying to grow over the edge. I don't actually know if it's much of a contamination vector or not but it worries me

I shook once at the very beginning because I used tiny pieces to inoculate the jars and than again at 50% is it safe to shake again? The jars recovered quickly both times.

I used a plate exactly like that that was starting to pin but I cut from the middle. Would this be the cause of slow growth along with the small wedges used to inoculate?

No I seriously doubt it.

A smaller wedge might take longer to colonize than a larger one because there is less myc to jump off.

On my grain masters, after a section about the size of an apple is colonized I give the jar a shake and it'll finish up in a few days tops.
Did you give yours a shake?

I gave it 2 and just did a 3rd to see if it recovers. I know it’s frowned upon but I have more masters that are moving better so it’s more of a science project at this point it’s been colonizing for so long.
