HELP with possible Oyster issue
    #26817950 - 07/11/20 06:05 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

HELP!! I moved Blue Oyster grain spawn to colonize substrate in monotub, and 5 days later I have this. It's been humid in the tub. It smells like mushrooms, but it looks concerning with this orange tint near top center of pic. Same texture, different color, like someone spray painted portions of it. Is the mycelium picking up sawdust/coffee color or is it contamination? Thanks in advance for your advice.

That does look like contamination to me.  I wouldn't toss it yet unless it starts to make spores though, a lot of times oyster mycelium will just eat it.

Thanks Forrester. How do I tell if it is making spores? Is it visible without a microscope?

Yes, I'm not familiar with that particular type of contaminant (maybe someone else here is), but if it's a mold of some sort it may form little black dots, or it may start to turn green, or something like that.  At that point you want to get it out of there to avoid mold spores all over your room.

I'm pretty positive that's mold and that it's already sporulating. Most molds are white/colorless until they sporulate, and yours has that powder look of spores.

Oysters are aggressive as hell, but at least that section of the tub is a lost cause.

Thanks zoidbergo. I spot treated it with isopropyl. Let's see what happens.

All you will do is grow stipe in a mono tub. Oysters need way more FAE than they can get in a mono tub to grow properly.

No, in oak sawdust with coffee and verm.

I have a fan and humidifier on a timer in the monotub with vents.

It seems like the Isopropyl followed up Peroxide mixed into verm solved the issue. Orange is gone!!

You should try to fruit them on bags, oysters dont do well growing upwards.

Sorry, but you got some bad info. I slice the bottom of my bag and flip the bag over so they have to grow upward. They don't do well in a mono tub because they don't get enough FAE. Not because they are growing upward.

Nice mushroom!! I will try to experiment with oysters both ways, sideways and upwards. I give FAE with fan, humidifer, and vents.

Any mushroom growing out of a bag sideways looks so cool in pictures.
