The value of life VS. the size of the life form * 1
    #26826646 - 07/16/20 10:01 AM (3 years, 6 months ago)

So while walking my dog we come across slugs. Usually big fat slimers that are hard to miss but i put my foot in front of them while my dog passes so he doesnt accidentally step on them. While on our walk today among the couple other slugs i see a baby slug and instinctively pass it by thinking, meh. Before a half step i realized im an asshole and need to look out for that stupid little bug. I protected it from my dog as per usual but question why i passed it up at first. Is it size? What makes a creature significant? What is significance? Why swat a fly or mosquito but save a slug?

Flies and mosquitoes actively want you dead and/or to be a walking buffet. Slugs and shit and even bees just want to be left alone. Flies and mosquitoes getting swatted(possibly dead) is a relatively fair reaction based on what they're trying to do. We're pretty OP in that matchup so it's hard to feel like it's fair but it is. Swat a wasp it's probably coming for your ass regardless of size differences. It's the law of the jungle. People love doggos but most people wouldn't mind punching one of it bit them real good. Compassion only extends as far as the limits of our tolerance.

Fuck flies, fuck mosquitos. I take the flytraps of bodies that I use in my garage and hang them outside my door as a reminder to the other flies and mosquitos to not fuck around in my house :house:

Yeah i do understand and agree with the fly and mosquito points i guess what im getting at is where is your line drawn? At what point is a life form worth protecting? Significant enough to protect?

I cringe when I hear the crunching of a snail beneath my shoe.  It hurts my heart every time...

It's hard to avoid in the dark...

My line is probably flies and mosquitoes. Everything else just wants a hug <3

Good question. I don't think it's up to me to decide who matters and who doesn't. In the end on a grand scale of everything, either none of us matter or all of us matter. I like to think we all matter. Even, and maybe especially slugs and bugs and stuff haha, at least from a more environmental perspective and less of a metaphysical one.

I try not to kill things. I know I don't live a harm free life by any stretch of the imagination. But I try not to kill things.

I will swat the fuck out of a mosquito that's harassing me though.

I figure life is hard enough for critters, they don't need me ending it prematurely for no good reason. It's a pretty basic instinct and primal level of empathy, you can find videos all day of animals helping other animals. An example is a clip I remember seeing of baboons chasing off a leopard or lion that had an antelope in its mouth.

I agree. My line is; if it's trying to eat me, I feel 100% justified in killing it.

Law of the jungle for sure.

Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.

We are deeply interwoven in the fabric of the universe, and the universe is continuously consuming and creating - itself.

We are also meaning making machines and have no way of stopping making meanings of things.

Valuing things makes life more meaningful and is less confusing than trying to make meaning of meaninglessness.

What's crazy to me is how something 300 to 500 pounds, like a male lion, can have a lifespan virtually the same of a house cat that weighs 8 pounds.

:joneswtf:

Lobsters are essentially immortal. Provided they arent damaged oir get sick, they keep on molting to bigger lobsters. A lobster was caught and died before the scientists realized it was 500 years old.

Yup. Or seeing crushed snails on a road after rain. But that's how it is. But when you think about it, those snails eat plants, plants that could be "good". Insects can become huge pests like we know and we must protect our crops from them, so they don't give a shit about us obviously. We don't need to give a shit about them. Taking pleasure in killing something is of course an entirely different thing.

Imagine if there were no pesticides or even other animals to help killing pests. We would not have made it beyond the hunter gatherer stage.
I don't know if they even had any other means to defend crops before pesticides and what not. They certainly tried those cain toads in Australia, but that didn't work out. In the bible there are mentioned swarms of crickets which destroy all the crops.
Have you guys seen those praying mantis videos ?

Reason for deletion: we are wired to feel more empathy towards the ones we perceive as more similar to us, but I replied to the wrong person

People tend to value regular people over the obese. So much for greater size
