It was a horrible drought before but finally the rain is coming through, we could be in for a longer season if the conditions stay favorable.
I dunno, since the end of may things have slowed right down where I am. Just dribs and drabs and WAHs. I need to find new grounds

Not to be a dick, but how did a shroom expert like you not already know that?
I tell you what. I knew NOTHING about scientific literature and bionomial names before I found out about psilocybin mushrooms.
I'm not your typical "oh chur cuzzy its a gold top" I want to actually learn about the organisms... I then learned that "gold top" is Psilocybe subaeruginosa, and here we are.
Ok so what is the NZ blue meanie in scientific terms? Heard a lot about them when I was a whippersnapper but not now.

I think I got it: subaeruginosa
sub= under/ not quite aerugo= latin for copper rust --> a reference to the blueing perhaps?
I think thats it too, was curious a while back and looked it up. Another word for that copper rust is verdigris.
Interesting that cyans, azures and subs have blue colour names.

xthrx said: Oh its just the old folklore shit about weraroa losing potency once dried, which I always disputed as Ive done the same and havnt noticed they are any different to other dried material, always interesting to get new perspectives
all shrooms are nicer fresh we know that
e.g. liberty caps are a very energetic trip fresh (which I've heard weraroa are too) and brightly visual but when dried get a heavier bodyload and dimmer visuals. I put it down to the more delicate alkaloid of psilocin (and possibly others) stabilising/degrading into psilocybin or other analogues which is going to be more apparent in species' with a higher balance of them.
This effect can be partially reversed using something acidic (i.e.lemon juice) to dephosphorylate it back into psilocin
This doesn’t really make sense, as if you used lemon to dephosphorylate (or the acid in your stomach) you would end up with the same bright visuals, etc? Most literature suggests that your high comes from psilocin, absorbed directly or from dephosphoryllation of psilocybin, or the other indole found recently that is a psilocin prodrug. . . Lemon tek definitely seems to speed up the lift-off from dried mushrooms, though nothing like fresh. . . Even the difference between ‘eating’ fresh mushrooms and a tea of fresh mushrooms is significant. . .
Fresh hit like a freight train, often the come up out performs the high as it can be super intense regardless of dose. . . Myths still circulate about the strychnine in psilocybes could just be that the human body has a crazy reaction to fresh chitin?

"Blue Meanie" is common slang for Psilocybe weraroa in Wellington apparently... In Auckland lots of people I know call Psilocybe subsecotioides "Blue Meanie".... and Psilocybe subaeruginosa "Gold Top"...
In Australia and USA however, they call Psilocybe cubensis "Gold Top" and they refer to Panaeolus cyanescens as "Blue Meanie"...
It's best to just use the binomial name where possible.
That said, when talking to people who don't know about the proper names of the things, then it is best to just use common names.
Some people don't give a fuck about binomial names, or are otherwise ignorant to their binomial names and just want to trip on magic mushrooms.
In the 90’s, ‘blue meanie’ mean P.aucklandii to my bunch-o-mates. . . Then again, what would JAFA’s know
P.aucklandii do bruise super blue black, and often are found with bruising from growth. . .

Found a new spot today. Not a big haul but I was too late for some of them. Quite public but will definitely be adding it to the list to check.

As far as names goes I remember back in the nineties I thought you got blue meanies from pine forests in Auckland and Goldtops from kiwifruit orchards in Tauranga lol. I’ve learned a lot since joining here this year.

Hey guys, quick question
Got a home grow going in a plastic pot outside. Are these pins?
Second question, what is the potency of subsecotiodes like after drying? I found some the other day and dried them out, not sure if this was stupid or not.

Think I may have found the winning WAH here. Found about 30 a few months back in the same spot as these, now I’m only finding the odd one or two

Ahh man that sucks!! Hope your other spots are ok. My 2 sub spots are fruiting so that’s a +. I did score a few WAH during the week so yeh season rolls on fingers crossed.
Yeh the mushroom hunters I knew in the 90s went to the pine forests so I think their “blue meanie” was aucklandii. Never saw or heard of secos or wareroa - they’re like some sci fi alien shit. Wasn’t super keen to hang out with the hunters I knew back then, I was 15 and they where crazy Westie dudes with nick names like waniac - 30 years old and hanging out with teenagers.... yeh... dafuq.

That is an excellent WAH there. I've had largely the same after a 5 or 6 good hauls at the beginning of the season I've just been getting WAHs. Still love finding just a few though.

Waniac. Sounds like a name you can depend on. Most of my spots have been smashed, hopefully they recover for next year.... otherwise I'll have to make a few trips to Auckland to scavenge there... I'm sure I'm most welcome right?
