Custom Cultivator Knife - Blade Concept
    #26824061 - 07/14/20 09:50 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Been at the drawing board for a bit and I’m pretty happy with where the blade design is at. Nothing too insane, but I like the way it functions more than forager blades. So I figured I’d share it and hopefully get some feedback and ideas for improvement. If you have any, please share.

I’ll be putting my ideas for handle design into CAD next. I’m going to have a copper punch tool for agar built in. There will also be a tool for light cleaning, but I haven’t decided if I want to use a brush or not. The other option is to hide a custom bladder in the handle and put a pressurized air blower right inside the copper punch tool.

Had you thought about a small ruler for measurements?

A thin handle and small blade is better for agar work. I see that as being potentially clumsy for agar work myself.

Did you just say O.J. Simpson Special? LMFAO!  Everyone ^^^ makes  to me.  An old saying is 'the proof is in the pudding'; I would add that people who design things never find success in their first 'draft'.  Make it, use it, improve it. But if you don't use it yourself, you don't know if it's any good.

That would be like me designing a bra for large-breasted women. Ah, nothing better on a chilly night...  The women that is...

You make a very good point! I could tell you stories (some good, some wha?), but that is a topic for a different thread :headbang:. I love this place -can't talk like this where I work.

That looks awkward and heavy. scalpels are long and thin for a reason. Imagine trying to write with a pencil shaped like that.

I think you just made a CS:GO knife :paranoid:

Thanks for all the feedback, much appreciated.

Seems like the majority concern is that this will be unwieldy for agar. Y’all have picked up on the fact that I was primarily focused on harvesting during design, with lab work being a lower priority... perhaps too low.

Ideally my tool would be perfect for every task, but that’s never the case with a multi tool of any kind. There’s a push and pull to the design, with the goal being to find a sweet spot in the trade off ratios and make up for that in simplifying things into one tool (and maybe additional functionality).

Is a Swiss Army knife better than a screwdriver at driving screws? No, but it’s better than a screwdriver for a bunch of other things and it can drive screws. That said, I think there’s room to improve the lab role without sacrificing much (or maybe any) of the other roles.

Thanks again for looking and giving feedback. Outside eyes are invaluable. Version 2 coming soon.

love the ruler idea and could etch one into either side of the tool (inches on one side, cm on the other). Would only be about 3” probably, but that’s not too bad.

To me, a knife doesnt make sense for harvesting, as my personal preference is push-twist-twist-pull rather than cutting, and then cutting the coir thats stuck to the stem. But even if I was cutting when harvesting, I dont think I would use a knife over small kiddy scissors as it would have to be extremely sharp and the mushies themselves properl attached for the "sickle" style of cutting to work. If you have access to all the machinery to make a knife, why not make scissors with a "L" shaped pair of blades? so you can cut horizontally from above :pipesmoke:

I had some 90* medical scissors that I used to harvest with. They were handy when I did tubs without liners. I still use scissors for 70% of my harvesting but sometimes if I have a large cluster I use the scalpel or knife underneath.

Lately I’ve been cutting right under the base of the stump so there’s no stump material left on the sub. The 2nd flush pins seem to like the nooks and crannies created.

This knife kinda looks like a karambit. Pretty cool look but would be a pita to sharpen.

Because I don’t cut from above. Got a new monotub setup I’ve been tweaking and will post about it soon.

Yep, it’s a modified karambit design. Sharpening isn’t the easiest, but the steel I’ll be using holds its edge through a ton of use. Since there’s really minimal wear in this work (shrooms and agar have very low resistance, plastic bags pretty low too) I don’t need to worry about durability and can really go all in on edge retention.
