Not getting Humidity
    #2682505 - 05/15/04 01:35 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

I'm having a problem getting my humidity up to the 90's. I've put a good solid layer of perlite in the bottom of my cooler and dumped plenty of water in the bottom. Still my humidity is sticking around 45%. I'm at a serious loss. Has anyone else have this problem?

How are you judging your humidity? Is the container air tight?

I have a styrofoam cooler that dried iced came in. It's pretty big.
I've now placed a couple of books on the lid to get a tighter seal. But i really think I got a good seal.

Make sure you dont put too much water into the perlite. Only put about half as much water as the depth of the perlite and try adding a long bubble wand with a fishtank air pump underneath the perlite to bubble through water and add moisture and fascilitate air movement.

Good Luck!

here's wut i do, i do my teks in a big rubbermaid container, see-through, and all i do, is i spray the HELL outta the thing, then put my trays in, (casings, cakes wutever) and i just let it go for a day or 2 and check in on it from time to time.. if u see water dripping everywere, u have 90-100% humidity bro, if the sides have nothing, there is 0-15% humidity... i have a humidity gauge and it is a piece of shit, wasted 16$

thanks to everyone who has replied. I found out the reason for my idiocy. My cakes are white as all get out, however there is no pinning taking place. the myc. is actually starting to grow off the cake like some sort of sapling. Where's all my pins? Is my humidity too high?

So how do I take the humidity down? Add more dry perlite or just take some of the wet perlite out?

your not going to get pinning in a styrofoam container. Light cannot pass thru styrofoam you need them to be in some light for abot 12 hours a day

I've actually cut a square out of the top of the terr. and glued a piece of plexiglass to form a window. The first week that the cakes were in the terr. I'd put a couple of dark towels over the top. Now that we're at day 9, I'm now allowing for the 12 hour light cycle. Does this sound right?

Don't you mean "hygrometer"??
A hydrometer tests the water content of a mixture...such as to show how much water content is in wine; or what water:antifreeze ratio is in your radiator; what the water content is of your car's battery; or even the water:salt ratio of a saltwater aquarium.

Just wanted to clear this up, so that some unsuspecting newbie wouldn't stumble upon this post, and go buy the wrong thing for checking humidity.

Yep

And i didn't think shrooms need that much light?  I've heard people doing all dark grows in other posts or just giving them the light when they open to fan.  Anyhow just wait they will pin eventually.

they dont need 12 hours of light, mine get about 2 min. a day and that works fine.
