I still don't understand how that works with no GE... I mean I guess you do what mushboy and pasty proposed and keep them twisted a little loose

I don't know if the wheel filters are a standard size but I just use a 5/32" hole on a plastic lid and pop the wheel filter in - it's so tight it doesn't leak or come apart.

I've used that stuff that's like ironed poly before , it's called "Kraft felt" at craft stores. Thos other filters look awesome!
Now tho spawn jar lids I like the autoclavable plastic lids, I make a 1/2 - 1" hole and pop an SFD up underneath.
Or I use plastic lid + poly fill.
Both are the best lids IMO.

In the pic below are gallon jars + 70mm lids. I use 1" lid holes now tho

I used a 5/32" inch drill bit yesterday for the very same filter.
It fits nice.. Like a glove..

I actually picked up my wheel filters from that Shroom Supply page, I was grateful they included the drill bit measurement to use

I just pulled my plastic unmodded lids from the pc. So far so good. Seems like they somehow tightened themselves while cooking.

It’s weird having no filter.

Is there a particular reason you are switching to unmodded lids?
I actually used lids this way when I first started

Mostly for convenience assuming they work out. Everytime I knock jars up I always wish I had one piece lids.

Plus some of my bands are getting rusted beyond use so I needed new lids.

I gotta ask, if one piece unmodified lids are the bee's knees, why use glass jars to begin with? Why not just use PP plastic jars?

Well one piece lids doesn't mean just umodified, it just means there isn't a metal band  lid (canning lid). A plastic lid with poly fill or SFD is a one piece lid too. It's just easier to work with because if the lid falls out of the band when inoculating it can be a pain and/or cause failures.

You can use PP5 plastic for spawn jars if you want to, sure. I like to use them for bottle Tek grows - and for those I just loosen the lid a little for GE (unmodded style).

I think glass Mason jars are just more available, maybe less expensive (Don't know PP5 prices off hand).

Here's an unmodified plastic lid on a jar and an SFD with lid how they go together. The SFDs always get a brown stain over time where the GE hole is, something about the grain steam .

Yeah, I'm using PP for spawn, canning glass jars aren't as available or as cheap around here.

If you're modifying them the ones in your picture definitely seems sturdier then the ziploc twist lids.
I thought the conversation was about unmodified lids, my apologies.

I've come to find that i prefer my lid setup to be... metal lids and bands. I use a nail to punch 5 holes in the center of the lid. Then i cover the holes with 3-4 layers of mp tape. They're cheap, easy to make and last a bunch of cycles before needing replaced.

When in the flow.... i remove the metal band and set it aside. I can wipe the whole jar with iso, threded area included. Then while i'm rubbing one out all up and into the bags.... i only have a single piece lid to deal with. And that lid also sits nice and flush on top of the jar inbetween knocking up bags.

I've used just about every lid setup you can think of... and... i prefer metal bands and lids...

Awesome to hear MP tape works fine. I've never been sure about it. Not from any personal experience, but just from others talking about it. But I'm always looking for ways to use it cause I have a shit ton of it leftover from when I thought I'd use it a lot lol.

Also, to contribute to the thread I finished this big boy tonight

Your flow hood looks great.. Nice job..

I could never let myself trust MP tape. Yes I have used It In a pinch.
I don't trust It for more than one pc cycle.

Synthetic filter disc cut to the size of a quarter silicone over a 1/4" hole makes more sense to me.

I have a bunch of SFD's just sitt8ng around, now. Because i've stopped using them.

I just find that bringing silicone into my lid assembley is just... well... extra.
