Pencil and paper, the easiest thing to do is to scan. If you don't have a home scanner, there are a few good places to check in most towns: campus copy shops, Fed Ex Office stores, and UPS stores almost all can do a scan and put it on a flash drive or email it to you, just ask them to scan at high resolution and bump up the contrast a bit if using gray pencil to make sure the details show up.

If photographing, use the best, highest resolution your camera allows, photograph in natural, not-too-bright light (outside on an overcast day or in a room with lots of windows but not right next to the windows is best).

This is absolutely untrue.  While it's nice to have "plug and play" solutions, we are not averse to adapting hand drawn designs for print, especially if they meet the guidelines noted in the original post of this thread.  Here's an example of a hand drawn design I made back in 2009 that we used on some limited edition staff merch:

       


Also important to remember is that "first place" will be decided by popular community vote, not by the admins or staff here.  Furthermore, it is very possible that we will do limited edition prints of artwork that doesn't place in the popular vote category.  This means that even if you don't place for any of the cash certificates to the Swag Haus, you can still score a free item (or items) with your design on it, if your design makes the cut for production!
