Next step suggestion
    #26823224 - 07/14/20 02:40 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Hi all,

I have now successfully grown and harvested regular oysters and my golden oysters are still colonizing in their buckets.

I had chosen oysters after reading online that they are the easiest species and it was very easy to produce some very tasty mushrooms using BRF cakes and spawning them to a coco + verm bulk substrate in buckets.

Now that I'm addicted to this new hobby, I'm thinking what would be the next step in terms of difficulty? I have a syringe of elm oyster in my fridge, which I will also inoculate into BRF jars. Not sure what bulk substrate they need.

If oysters are the easiest, what would you consider to be the next step in difficulty? What kind of mushroom would you suggest to try next which isn't terribly difficult to grow but which is a step harder than oysters? Are the elm oysters already harder than regular oysters or are they just another kind of easy to grow oysters?

Not sure on the difficulty, but you could try Piopinno. I've heard they are delicious, and they look pretty simple to grow as well!

I would say your next step is to learn oysters better. Buy some bags, Hardwood fuel pellets and wheat bran or soy hulls. Soy hulls will produce better but may be harder to find. Learn to do oysters well. It is better to do one well than 2 poorly.

Buy the 14A bags...

I can give you a recipe for the sub if you let me know which one you will be using soy or bran.

Pioppinos are pretty easy, and really fun.  Even unsupplemented they grow like crazy!

This took absolutely NO skill: (swordbelt strain from Aloha)

I guess that is sound advice. After I harvested my first flush, weather became dry and my second bucket's mushrooms kind of dried out too much. I also didn't get a second flush out of them yet.

Maybe I'll try to first master the easiest mushrooms and then continue from there. I don't like the idea of plastic bags that much. Isn't putting them into transparent buckets similar to a bag? What is the advantage of putting them into the bag instead of a bucket? That one is able to sterilize the whole bag before spawning it?

After reading through this and also having experienced that my oysters aren't always growing perfectly, I'll stick with the oysters for some more time.

Your tipp is appreciated and I'll write it to my list of things to do after I am sufficiently experienced with the even easier oysters. Thank you for replying.

The difference is time and effort. Even if you use a bucket most people line the bucket with a bag. The only thing you can't get more of is time. So spend it wisely!!

A lot of time will be saved not having to scrape old substrate chunks out of buckets, when you can just pull the bag out and toss it.  That's why we line buckets.  And no, you don't sterilize the bag, it's a trash bag - it would melt.
