POLL: at what temperature do you think Psilocybe Cubensis grows fastest?
    #26822228 - 07/14/20 12:55 AM (4 years, 6 months ago)

Question! This is the second time I do monotubes and it seems that my monotubes are growing much slower this time. My temperature is 72℉ - 74℉ now. Last time it was 76℉ - 79℉. Do they grow faster at 79 ℉? At what temperature do you think Psilocybe Cubensis grows fastest?
Fastest growth cubensis

It probably grows faster at higher temperature if I had to guess, but contaminants will also grow faster and easier at higher temperature. If you go with a slightly lower temperature, I think it'll give the mycelium a much better chance over anything else that might be growing. It's probably worth a little extra time in exchange for healthier mycelium and a higher success rate.

Probably room temperature is just about perfect.

"Room temperature" is extremely subjective. I prefer to be at 75-76 F in my living space and can easily be comfortable up to 80 as long as it isn't too humid. In the spring and fall, down to 68 or 70 is fine to get fresh air. You may prefer totally different ranges for your room temperature, and room temperature in Florida with all the AC may be lower than room temperature somewhere else.

I'm appreciative when people provide recommendations based in their experience with actual temperatures, to avoid this ambiguity.

I can’t stand heat so I find temps between 65-72 to be comfortable. Cubes IME however do appreciate it to be at least 70 so I would aim for something between 70-79 for good results. 65 is doable but they will be noticeably slower.

If speed is the only factor then crank it up!
Only being concerned about speed is like a NASCAR driver only concerned about his car's speed and not his cars reliability.
Warmer temperatures speeds up the life cycle of pretty much all organisms btw. When we're talking about cubes it tends to make the stems more hollow while lower temperatures tends to make the fruits more dense.

Mushrooms seem to grow pretty quickly here on the hotter days when it reaches +28C inside. During colonization period such temp usually leads to contaminations and incomplete colonization though, something just above +20C works best then.

I had Brf jars that stayed 70-80* that fully colonized in 14 days, also had a 50% contam rate but that is also contributed to by using a MSS and poor sterile tek. That was my first round so I’m looking to improve that on my next batch

I just colonized some quart sized jars, my house stays around 85-90F (swamp cooler getting installed ina few weeks!!) and they colonized in about a week and a half. Spawned to a tub, it has been about a week and is colonizing pretty quick. Seems like they are doing ok at this temp, but I am definitely a little concerned about contams.

I read that hot air can hold more water than cold before it condenses. Could that be a factor that the mushroom likes? Feels logical IMO. Is it not the case that the mushroom grows by sucking in water from the air?

Mushrooms draw water from the substrate they are growing on. The reason we need high humidity in the chamber is because shrooms lack skin and will lose moisture to the ambient air if the RH isn’t high enough. This can cause them to crack or abort.

Are you sure? I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the mushroom absorb moisture from the air and thus grow.

Also, can the monotube have a shortage of air, and yet at the same time have a shortage of RH?

Depends on what you mean by "absorb moisture from the air".

When temps drop or the air becomes over saturated with humidity it condenses.

This creates a nice dew layer if the temp swings are high enough, but is completely impractical for indoor cultivation...

In short, mycelium has no way to absorb any appreciable quantity of moisture from the air. Once it condenses onto the surface it can, but even that is inconsequential for our purposes unless you live in the tropics.
