Almost killed a kitten this afternoon! 7

Throughout the day we were hearing some kind of animal cries from time to time. We have neighbors with lots of pets so I didnt really think too much about it. Later in the day I started doing yardwork and was chopping down weeds against our fence with this traumatically efficient instrument of weed death and maiming destruction:

I get about half way done and am hitting this bush really low. I mean like as low to the ground as I can get it. After stopping to clear the spiky ass bush from the grass I see a black furball wedged up against the fence, right where I just trimmed. Then it made the cry sound and I was like FUCKING SHIT ITS A CAT. Maybe 2 weeks old, left by its mom or who knows but it was stuck in that bush all fucking day. I carefully got it out and by some miracle it was completely unharmed, by whatever trip it took to get in the furthest corner of that spiky bush, or by the hedge trimmer.
We are taking care of it right now. My kid named her Scratchy

Totally fair trade. I adopted 2 kittens through a friend a few months ago and the kitten cuddles have made living alone during the pandemic bearable.

Good job Mick. Get the little guy checked out by a vet as soon as you can. If mom abandoned him it was for a reason and the most common one I know of is because they're sick.
Is he feeding normally?

I'm not a cat person AT ALL but I'm suprised nobody has said you should have waited and watched bush because just cos the mother wasnt there does not mean she has abandoned it. Cats have like a 5 acre radius they hunt.....she could have been out hunting

Look out for momma like dude said. Obviously, I’m a cat person. Absolutely fell in love with animals/cats after getting off heroin. I feel like the book “ a street cat named bob” was a similar life to mine years ago. Much love dude seriously, compassion is a huge strength. You’re a good person.

Kittens can get separated from their momma even if they're not sick. I've found several litters of kittens that didn't have a mom around to look after them when we found them. Some had eye infections which were easy to fix with antibiotics the vet gave us.
Although it would be better to let the kitten live with her mom longer, having a safe home with you is ultimately going to give her a better life than being feral. And if you wait too long, they get mistrustful of humans and difficult to catch, much less tame. IMO it's better to grab them when you can as long as you have means to give them a safe home and basic medical care.
Agree that getting her checked out by a vet ASAP is a good idea. At least to confirm age and general health.
If she really is only 2 weeks old she probably can't eat solid food yet. You can buy kitten formula that you can feed them with an eye dropper or syringe without the needle.
In high school my family found 4 baby kittens who were too little to eat solid food and I kept them in my room and fed them this way. We kept one as a family pet and I took her with me when I moved out of my parents' house. She was awesome and we always had a special bond. I had her for 17 years until she finally got sick and I had to put her to sleep.
When you can be part of their lives from an early age you can teach them that humans are good and many cats will end up giving you their affection almost like dogs. My two wait on the mat in my entryway just by the door, waiting for me to come back home.
OP, make sure you kitten proof whatever room you're keeping her in. They will chew on and get into/under/behind spaces so small you wouldn't believe.

Good advice. I love cats man. It’s really interesting to watch my daughter (almost 2) grow up and see how the cats react to her. They weren’t fond of her at first, bc my daughter would be rough with them but now my kid says goodnight to them every night before bed and then we tuck her in and the cats come in her room and say goodnight. I can’t wait to watch them grow up and love each other.

My parents got a kitten when I was about 2 and she was a fairly badass, half wild, mostly outdoor cat. She was extremely patient with 2 year old me. There are pictures of me holding her with my arms outstretched like forklift prongs under her belly (not too uncomfortable but probably a weird way for her to be held) and she's just dealing with it.
I would yell her name to call her home and it usually only took a minute or so for her to come running, bounding out of the edge of the acres of woods behind our backyard. I'm still honored that she was willing to do that for me (even knowing she did sometimes get food for her effort... I think she was perfectly capable of catching her own).
People think dogs have the market cornered on loyalty, but in my experience cats can be just as loyal in many ways.

That’s nice to hear. I actually grew up very allergic to cats, it’s interesting how that worked out. When I lived in a city, I would walk my cat on a leash downtown. Was a great time.
