The big improvement is in the smart TV functions right now. A lot of them are finally (somewhat) catching up dedicated boxes like AppleTV and Shield. My el cheapo 55" HDR tv even has built in Roku, which is nice, because they regularly update the OS. Of course, I've used AppleTV's for years, so it's not getting used in my case, but having a viable modern OS for serving content makes getting the mileage out of the set a good bit easier.

You are however correct that the 4k step has pretty much meant there's not much else to do, outside of blacks. I do think going for a cheaper TV and spending some money on a good sound system might actually be better step then getting the most expensive TV you can afford. Often in movies imersiveness is very dependent on sound quality.

Go with Samsung or Sony.  Going to upgrade myself and my Samsung flat screen is still going strong at 14 years.  Ready for a smart t.v. as I can't stream HBO Max or Apple T.V.  I really fucking hate Apple.  Have wasted so much time on their shit.

Would pay extra and go for the long term with a quality brand and do a lot of research before doing so.  Like you are doing now, posting this.

Personally waiting till ordering one on when when everything is cheaper after Thanksgiving.  Same with the next Gen. consoles.  Going with the P.S. 5 over Xbox.  But to your post, wouldn't recommend buying a cheap brand.  Believe me with electronics, it is worth it on so many levels.

Many of the cheap brands are built in the same manufacturing houses as the expensive brands, and a lot of the components are shared no matter the brand name. The same goes for dishwashers, washing machines, refrigerators, driers, stoves, you name it. More often than not the big brands are more expensive simply for the branding. The Samsung TVs are also famous for spying on you, so even if they've cleaned up their act, I think I would avoid them on principle.

Interesting post Ythan :takingnotes:

I guess when it comes to burn-in, QLED has the upper edge :strokebeard:

For HDR, im not too familiar with the different qualities. I guess just go for the most expensive TV u can afford with HDR capabilities

I agree to an extent....

....I stopped watching TV pretty much entirely 10+ years ago. I haven't sat down in front of a TV just to "watch TV" in over a decade. I haven't watched any TV shows/series or any new movies in over a decade. The TV in my room hasn't been turned on for about 8 or 9 months now lol.

But having a decent quality TV with a somewhat large screen is one thing I still like to have on hand, mostly just for the sake of "eye candy"...

....I enjoy watching nature documentaries from time to time (a few times year), things like the "Planet Earth" series and other similar nature docs that were filmed in HD/4K. I watched a documentary a couple years ago that was about bugs/insects and it was filmed all in "macro" with super high quality cameras, that was gnarly seeing it on a large HD/4K screen.

Watching those sorts of things on a large high quality screen is super cool, and that's pretty much the only reason I'd want to have a decent TV on hand lol. I'm not into any TV shows/series and I find the majority of movies to be garbage/cookie-cutter crap.

I've been so out of touch in regards to the tech involved with TVs and other consumer electronics over the past 10 years or so. I used to keep up on all of it.

Get a Vizeo or LG.  They don't spy on you.  :wonka:  Your life is very interesting and this is coming from a person, me, that covers his laptop camera with a golden sticker!

Seriously go with quality and long life.  Or fear and worry someone is watching you.  I get it with computers and laptops.  T.V.'s, not so much.

No joke, fam.

https://money.cnn.com/2015/02/09/technology/security/samsung-smart-tv-privacy/index.html

My 8? year old Vizeo that’s 1080p is still rocking today. It was a highly rated tv for its price range (mid) at the time. I think the picture looks damn near as good as my year old 4K HDR tv with only a few exceptions. The problem still remains the true HDR content is hard to find. 4k stuff is pretty common now, but a lot of the streaming services are still holding out because of the bandwidth demands. And if you don't have the bandwidth at home, it's not going to work anyways as it will get transcoded down in the lower quality streams.

Heh, Vizio might not spy on you anymore but if they don't it's only because they got busted and taken to court over it. I got a $20 check from that settlement.

LG TVs also use content recognition last I checked. It's pretty common for all smart TVs to subsidize the price with intrusive monitoring. You can usually turn it off if you know where to look. Here's a slightly outdated guide. The other option is to use something like a Pi-hole to block the tracking at a network level.

I'm willing to pay around $1,000 for a 55 or 65".

Can anybody help me get the lay of the land in the TV space and get some state of the art, beautiful shit?

If you help steer my purchase decision to some exceptional shit, I will kick back $25 for the help. Win-win, chickies.

+1 for pi-hole, installed mine a few days ago. Didn't realise everything from my lights to the TV is trying 'to call home' and tracking your ass.

Anyways,
I have a 55" Samsung RU7100 and am happy with it for the price I paid.

Yikes!
https://www.cnbc.com/2017/03/09/if-you-have-a-smart-tv-take-a-closer-look-at-your-privacy-settings.html

Be careful what you say in front of your Samsung TV. It's listening to you.
Many Samsung "SmartTVs" come equipped with voice recognition, which allows you to bark commands at your TV. Since the television is always listening for your voice, Samsung has warned its SmartTV customers that every word is being captured and sent over the Internet.

"Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party through your use of Voice Recognition," Samsung posted in its SmartTV privacy policy.

Okay, that's pretty creepy.

Samsung says it needs to send your voice commands to a third-party, because that company converts your speech to text. But Samsung also collects your voice commands to perform research and determine whether it needs to make improvements to the feature.

Samsung noted that a microphone appears on the screen when the voice recognition feature is turned on, notifying customers that their voice is being captured. You can opt-out of the SmartTV voice recognition feature.

But even if you opt out, your voice commands will still be captured. The SmartTV has a set of pre-programmed commands that it recognizes even if you opt out of voice recognition. Samsung will collect the text of those pre-programmed voice commands (though not your voice itself) and analyze how much you're using certain commands.

"Samsung does not retain voice data or sell it to third parties," the company said in a statement. "If a consumer consents and uses the voice recognition feature ... the voice data is sent to a server, which searches for the requested content then returns the desired content to the TV."

Samsung did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the identity of the third party or whether that company records the voice data.

I've never had a TV with any time of integrated voice control simply because I was afraid of the data collection. Of course the most recent Apple stuff has Siri, so I guess I lost.

I've run a pi-hole for years because I have a child and I like to limit exposure to various things. I run the docker on my Synology NAS. Works like a charm!

Nice man! I got a DS718+ for torrents, plex, and other media storage. Thinking about upgrading to something with more bays, but I have two 10 tb reds in there now, pretty powerful for something the size of a toaster haha.

Synology for the win! Yeah, I love mine. It's a little pricey, but it works so well I have no regrets. I've had other NASs that were nightmares.
