Help me buy a new TV
    #26819756 - 07/12/20 03:42 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

I'm looking for something with really impressive, state of the art tech that will really wow you with its colors, brightness etc. I don't know anything about TV's though.

I'm willing to pay around $1,000 for a 55 or 65".

Can anybody help me get the lay of the land in the TV space and get some state of the art, beautiful shit?

If you help steer my purchase decision to some exceptional shit, I will kick back $25 for the help. Win-win, chickies.

I’m one of those people who really can’t see much of a difference in video quality.  There are of course really bad ones on the cheap and really good ones at the super expensive end, but in that 600-1k level, they all look the same to me.  At that price, I look at the other features, like number of inputs, viewing angle, glare on the screen, remote functions, etc.

Buy the samsung qled series, i picked up a 55" for $699 and it is very nice. The LGs are probably better but not imho worth the upcharge over the samsung. Great tv, amazing clarity compared to the 1080p it replaced, like going from standard def to high def all over again

How bright is the room and how far from the TV are you sitting?

In the broadest sense, OLED is going to give you the best picture quality, but at your price point you'll need to decide between a larger screen size vs. quality.  I tend to prefer a larger, more immersive viewing experience.

The difference between the lowest qled and the next level up is selective on/off of the backlight. Above that it gets into thinner and thinner bezels and panels.

HDR is the newest tech. Stands for High Dynamic Range. Also OLED or organic LED. The best of the best. So make sure your new TV has both OLED and HDR capabilities :yesnod:

Buy a cheap 4k HDR TV, replace it every three or four years and you'll be ahead of the game.

The content isn't there to really push 4k HDR in a meaningful way right now, so it's a waste to go over board. And getting that quality into your TV remains an issue. This is true even with self hosted content, as a true 4k HDR movie is in the 60gb-100gb range. Then you have to stream that, if you direct play it at full rates, you are looking at 8mb/s to 20mb/s, sometimes more, so to do that reliably you basically need to run hard line to your TV or box. Generally, I try to direct play as reduces load on my server, but sometimes you just can't get the bandwidth to do it. Especially if I am off the LAN. I have a fios gigabit too, so it shouldn't be an issue, but at times it still is.

Quantum LED is qled tek from samsung
Organic LED us oled from lg

Qled still uses a back light and is an evolution of lcd whereas oled uses individual light emitting diodes. As such oled blacks will be blacker although higher end qleds can turn off the backlight at a pixel level.

Like i said OLED is better but a 55" oled is $1500+ whereas a 55" qled is $699+, not worth it to me.

I don't think I'd recommend an OLED TV honestly. When they're new they look awesome and the infinite contrast ratio is amazing. But all OLED panels suffer from burn-in. No matter what marketing says, or what customers in denial try to claim, it can't be avoided with current tech. It's barely acceptable on phones which most people replace every few years. On a TV that's frequently displaying static network logos in the corner of the screen, or fixed UI elements from video games, or movies with black bars for hours at a time, I predict burn-in will become noticeable long before you'd choose to upgrade otherwise. For this reason QLED tech would be my suggestion for now. Eventually microLED will be the superior option for emissive displays but it's still a ways off.

If it was me I'd just get something like the TCL 65R625 and save the extra cash for a soundbar or PS5 or something. :yesnod:

Nah.  The difference is that the lower QLEDS are edge-lit and the higher quality are full array, which is pretty big difference.  They also have different frame rates, but that isn't all that important IMO unless you like a fake-looking soap opera effect.

Any decent set will come with HDR, you'll pay a bit more for Dolby Vision, which is (more or less) dolby's version of HDR.

While burn-in is a hypothetical concern with OLED, most owners think the risks are overstated.

What would you suggest as an alternative?

How do the rest of you guys feel about this "burn in"?

I don't think LG would be a market leader selling $3,000 77" C9 TVs if they were ruined by burn in.

If you go heavy on games, think about it, otherwise, its a very minor risk, IMO.  Years ago they said the same about plasma TVs and I never had an issue.

I've certainly seen more than a few Plasma tv's with some serious burn in. They also ran really hot, my brother in laws plasma TV burn the wall paper off the wall directly behind the TV.

This is why I say it's dumb to buy a $3k TV. In three years, a $500 TV will be just as good, but the content will still lag. There's a reason why most stores play special content for their high end TV's.

I would tend to agree, except we're approaching diminishing returns.

For example, resolution increases beyond 4k won't be perceptible.  Blacks are pretty deep and in the case of OLED, you can't get much darker.  I'd say things are slowing and we're in the evolutionary phase of TVs. Buy something decent now and you won't see perceptible differences for some time.
