Any reason to not leave mushrooms over silica to keep them dry over long periods of time?

Yeah there are just better methods. A dehydrator for 24 hours on 160°F, then I use a 5gram desiccant package per pound if there's any trace moisture or bag imperfections.
The sooner it's dried and preserved the better. There's no benefit to using a slower method over a faster one.
-------------------- But if you're in a hurry, and really got to go If you're in a hurry, might have to find out slow That it's one thing to try and another to fly You get there quicker just a step at a time It's one thing to bark, another to bite The show ain't over till you pack up at night

I dry mine with a fan for two to three days depending on the type of mushroom then add silica. My question is, is there any reason to not store them indefinitely with silica?

So wait, once the mushrooms are cracker dry (I have a dehydrator) can you use silica cat sand in the jar with mushrooms instead of desiccant packs?

1. silica cat sand is not food safe. but it works if you put a layer of tissue between mushrooms and silica cat sand.
2. in long term use of silica cat sand since it contains silica dust it can cause upper respiratory issues.
3. use silica beads orange color when they are full with moisture they will either turn green or white and from that point you can heat them in microwave and reuse them.
4. never use blue silica gel its also call food safe but its not it got cobalt chloride. when fill with moisture it goes purple or white
5. white silica gel have no color indication of moisture so it needs to be weight before and after use.
5. place the mushrooms in container on top of mushrooms place a tissue on top of that place a thin layer. store it in dark dry place. can not put mushrooms directly on silica gel since all silica gel is toxic.
i fan dry when dehydrator is full.been using silica gel orange beads for a year never got in to problem. one year is the top i went with silica gel.for a very long term storage after drying vacuum seal the bag.

Thanks so much for the facts. Currently using silica gel with a paper towel to separate. I’ll take them out and put them in a jar and find some silica packets so they are separated better and no chance of mixing.

silica gel packets contain white silica gel weight them before putting. so later in couple of days you can weight and can see if there was any moisture left in mushrooms that way you can improve your drying skills. also use mask if you dry any silica gel it gives out silica dust
