Advice needed 1

I have a buddy who is an amateur artist. I was viewing his art on snapchat when he posted them and I asked him if he could make me an original piece to hang up in my new house. He agreed, and painted me a painting. It's not a Picaso, but it's a pretty decent piece. When I asked how much he wanted for it, he just said "whatever you feel like paying me."
So now I don't know how much to pay him and I don't want to offend him by paying him too little? I need help determining a good price so I don't look like a dick.
It's about 24x18, framed, and he said it took him around 7 hours total to paint and frame it. I was thinking $200? Any input is appreciated.

Thatโs pretty fair for not even an asking price I wouldnโt worry about it 200 bucks is a good return on 7 hours of work if you are an amateur artist

You should be forthcoming and just ask them how much they want for it, and if you can't afford it give it back and politely let them know they can find another buyer.
Mixing business with friendship is not always the best idea.

The straight math dividing price by hours doesn't take into account the materials. The canvas, the frame, whatever paint or media he used.
I would say materials could easily be $50, although it could be higher or lower depending on quality.
Go $250, if you can.

Yeah it isn't that I can't afford it, I just don't want to low ball him as I don't know how much to pay for art. I wanted to be a good friend and support him since he seems really into it and I know none of our other friends have asked him to paint for them.
I asked him TWO times how much he wanted. The first time he said he didn't know and he would let me know when it was done. Then when he brought it over, I asked him and he gave me the "pay me whatever you feel it's worth." That part was included in the OP if you may have missed that. Judging from your post I don't think you clearly read the OP.

It's amateur for sure so the quality isn't amazing, but it's not bad either. I did not take into account the cost of materials so I will definitely go for the $250. I just hope it's enough and I don't offend him.
I will also add he does art for fun, it is not his career or a way he usually makes money.

Thats a tough one. I mean, how do u put a price on Original Art? Thats tough....
I think $250 is pretty fair depending how detailed/quality the art is.

That's tough, man. I second the "post a pic" idea. What's the quality of the work? That makes a difference. Your friend is opening himself up to criticism when selling art and if he is like me, he wants an honest opinion of what you think his work is worth. (And some cash) At the end of the day, only you can decide what to pay him.
Would be cool to see it though.

He doesn't sell art. I just asked him to paint me something and he did. He paints as a hobby right now, and I am 99% sure I am the first person to ask him for a painting.
I will try and post a pic, my phone is old so the picture quality won't be the best lol.

250 is plenty fair I got 4 paintings like that (one similar sized and 3 descendingly sized smaller pieces) unframed for 180 shipped, and I requested what each one would be

Yeah he did a great job for sure. He asked what I wanted painted and I just said something kind of psychedelic and he came up with this.

You never really said how happy you were with it. "Decent". $200 is very generous and your a good friend for supporting him. Going forward I think pay is based on how pleased you are with the work, but this sounds more like charity.
