Cube grower interested in learning edibles.
    #26820010 - 07/12/20 06:51 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Hey fam! My lady has been bugging me about growing something she can eat. Does anyone have any suggestions of their favorite teks or starting point? I don't care what I grow but preferably something normal like shiitake or oyster. Yes I'm  aware there's a search bar, I poked around a little there too, but I also like the idea of talking about it with mush folks.

Oysters. I suggest pearl oyster since it does well in warm conditions for the summer, and the mycelium is quite aggressive.

Pearl oyster is a good choice. Oysters need a lot of FAE so don't think they can be grown like cubes. Mono tub grows will not work nor will shotgun fruiting chambers. I would suggest either building a tent or just growing on your kitchen table with ambient light and a lot of misting. You will need a 40 lb bag of hardwood fuel pellets about $6 and either soy hulls or wheat bran if you can find the soy hulls get them if not get the wheat bran. With a 40 lb bag of soy hulls and a 40 lb bag of fuel pellets you can make about 33 5 lb bags of sub and each bag should produce at least 1.5 lbs om mushrooms 1st flush.

The weights are is lbs all except the water that is because I have a flow meter that puts my water directly into my bags.

Be careful with the water in those recipes. Since you are a cube grower. I will let you know that field capacity is different from fuel pellets than with coir. You want maybe one drop from fuel pellets any more and you have to much water content.

I suggest going with a quality spawn provider over buying a spore syringe.
You never know what you will get with a spore syringe. With a good spawn provider, you will get a proven good producer and save yourself a lot of time. I have Aloha Medicinals Elma (pearl oyster) petri dishes if you are interested. If you just want the spawn here is the link...

https://alohamedicinals.com/organic-grain-spawn/

Throw a single grain on some Petri dishes and then make master slants and you will have spawn for a lifetime.

Here is the best place to buy your bags get the 14A bags...

Awesome, thanks guys! Follow-up questions: I assume my SAB sterile technique needs to be good just like with cubes right? If I get those Petri dishes? I am not the best with a SAB rn, I still go spores to grain 🤐 in that case should I consider buying an LC instead of an agar plate? (Eventually I'm just going to build a flow hood which is why I haven't been persistent about fixing my sterility issues.)

Thanks for the links! Is there anywhere local I should be looking at for soy hulls? I see they have them at Wal-Mart but not sure if there's a better local option that typically doesn't appear online.

I have two greenhouses for cubes, would  those work for your suggestion of building a tent?

It sounds to me like you need to work on your sterile technique. You should have very little chance of contaminating anything in a SAB everything should be clean in a SAB and sprayed down with Lysol. They are harder to work with but just because you are limited in the size of the box.

With a flow hood, it is easier to work but you will have a greater chance of contamination if your technique is bad.

You can go for LC if you want. I have not done LC before because I try to use the best methods out there. I am not sure if they isolate the mycelium before they make the LC or not but I doubt it. So I don't know if you will be getting something proven to fruit well. Doing G2G is faster than an LC for sure. My 5 lb grain bags are done in about 8 days doing G2G. With a petri dish, you get a lot of chances to get it right if you make more Petri dishes and don't contaminate the original dish. I sell dishes for $10 and I could make at least 100 dishes out of one of my dishes.

LC is fine, and should be from an good strain, just like any grain spawn. The only problem is that contams are harder to spot, but if you get it from a good source it should be fine. Lots of commercial operations use LC as well.
Spores shouldn't be used unless you're trying to breed your own strains.

Should be easier to work with if your sterile technique is lacking sometimes. Try Lipa tek is you want to start real easy, get a good LC syringe and make grain spawn with it (or buy grain spawn) and just use pure hwfp and spawn heavy. Should be fine with oysters, heard other species work fine as well from others.

In your case I would highly suggest doing this - I had a lot of great success in my earlier days using LC syringes of edibles purchased from vendors.  You can inoculate in open air and don't need great sterile technique.

Give it a shot first and if you need to, deal with all that SAB crap later.

Just my opinion.

I understand that LC may get him halfway, but then he still has to inoculate his sub bags. That is why I suggested getting better at his technique. If there is something I am missing could you please elaborate. Are you saying go straight to the sub bags with LC?

No I'm saying just use LC to make grain spawn, and spawn open air like I always did with ALL edibles.

Unless using soy hulls counts as supplementation like bran and you have to sterile spawn?

I'm not familiar with soy hulls and always did all my edibles unsupplemented

Ok, that makes sense. I was just thinking of trying some unsupplemented bags. Then I come here and read this. I think it is a sign from above. I just found out I have to buy a ton of soy hulls and I have no place to store them. Well, I do but I don't want to do the work to move things around.

Hell if you're going unsupplemented, screw bags and do some 5 gallon buckets, that's where the fun is at!

I already have the 5-gallon buckets with holes in them so I might give that a shot. I usually get close to 2 lbs off of a 5 lb bag 1st flush. So if I try it I will weigh the sub to see how much difference there is. I am buying a ton of fuel pellets tomorrow and still debating on the soy hulls. I am trying to be prepared just in case of a food shortage. With this unwanted Chinese export going around you all better get prepared also.

Is there a particular tek you like for this that you could link me to? Would it work for Lion’s Mane? I’m a cube grower looking to make some healthy meals for the family, and just got a bag of LM spawn from a vendor. Been searching around for some potential starting points once I get some of it on agar and then grains.

Yeah you can totally do lion's mane that way, I never have myself though so I can't say whether it would be ideal or not though.

The easiest tek to follow is lipa's bucket tek.  Basically you just pour boiling water over fuel pellets (in the proper amounts, which takes a little tinkering), and then once it's cooled, mix the spawn in and fill your bucket w/holes.

Lion's mane is gonna want to fruit internally if there's any air space though, which makes harvest a nightmare so that's why I'm not sure buckets would be ideal for it.

Theorycrafing here, but I could take a sheet of plexiglass and cut a circle to fit inside the bucket (maybe put a small foam ring around the outside edge to make an airtight seal). Then, after filling the bucket with spawn and dust, place the plexiglass on top (with a small weight perhaps) so there’s no air in contact with the mix. You think that’d be worth trying?

I think it would work.  I've done it before with other species, only I just used a dinner plate
