I personally glue little circles to the top or bottom.  Ive had some lids stay glued for over 10 yrs.  Silicone does fail tho and it sure sucks to go shake a jar and the filter flies off cause the silicone was getting weak

Lids don't seal on the threads at all, the only seal is the top of the glass touching the underside of the lid. Like where the red gasket is on a metal lid. The threads are only a mechanical force to press the lid against this gasket area.

3D printers leave huge 100+ micron gaps all over in between the layers you will never get a lid to work right. Maybe enough layers and it would be it's own built in air filter hehe.

I was thinking of maybe using silicon to make a gasket built into the lid-- I know about the gaps, and I'm thinking I might could hit the whole thing with a polyurethane spray coat or similar, just to seal up the gaps. This is only a proof-of-concept to see if I can run one through a PC cycle without it melting or falling apart.

Yea you could hit the whole thing with something like JB weld and scrape it with a squeegee to fill any gaps, like bondo-ing a car. JB weld is totally temp resistant and PC safe I use it to glue luer lock fittings to my LC lids.

I'd thought about that too-- the reason I was thinking a polyurethane spray is that it seems hard to squeegee out the inside of the lid, and I've used polyurethane to finish prints before. I have to look at the melting point- I'll probably end up going through a few different iterations before I settle on one way to do it.

You would just need to do the outside not the inside (with my jb weld scrape) Just kinda paint it on lightly all over and wipe all off everything you can immediately. That should seal it up nice.

Check your silicone tube for its temp range. Mine goes up to like 400F, so it's safe to PC.

I had a horrible sfd experience when I switched cuz I wanted the filter stuck to the lid to make things easier.

These plastic ones will be absolutely perfect if they work out, one piece no filter. Simple as it gets.

When i was doing lots of jars i started putting the filters on the inside of the lids because when u take a piping hot jar out of the pc, if u disturb the grain too much in spurts out a bunch of steam and the pressure xombined with the heat can burst the finters off the lid

I rock poly!

In honesty I'll probably switch to the unmodded plastics at some point though.

Here are the jar lids I use

The filters I use that's like thick ironed polyester are siliconed then rtv to help. I started using a whole piece to cover the little filter on the one jars. They never contam doubled up.
The sfd ones with 3/8 hole work perfect.  Wide mouth and regular. I use the whole sfd.
The LC lids work great. I stopped using silicone and use grommets.
I like the mushroom filter sticker too. I have the little filter stickers but dont use them much.

I don't know if the wheel filters are a standard size but I just use a 5/32" hole on a plastic lid and pop the wheel filter in - it's so tight it doesn't leak or come apart.

I've used that stuff that's like ironed poly before , it's called "Kraft felt" at craft stores. Thos other filters look awesome!
Now tho spawn jar lids I like the autoclavable plastic lids, I make a 1/2 - 1" hole and pop an SFD up underneath.
Or I use plastic lid + poly fill.
Both are the best lids IMO.

In the pic below are gallon jars + 70mm lids. I use 1" lid holes now tho

this is blowing my mind- haven't all you guys heard of North Mountain jars??  They are jars with no glass pattern and one piece metal lids that don't warp.  Look them up on Amazon.

I just pulled my plastic unmodded lids from the pc. So far so good. Seems like they somehow tightened themselves while cooking.

It’s weird having no filter.
