Agarikon and Corona
    #26819572 - 07/12/20 02:29 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Recently I watched a few Paul Stamets videos on the Agarikon mushroom and its medicinal uses. Paul seems to be very convinced of its value in treatments for illnesses like Tuberculosis and the Flu. I have no experience and limited knowledge about medicine but it seems to me that if this mushroom can help treat these two respiratory illnesses (one viral and one bacterial) it may have some potential in helping find a cure for Coronavirus. Is this a reasonable assertion or am I out of bounds here? Also, what do you all think the likelihood is that any research or testing would even happen around this?

Also just thought I would add this quote from Mycelium Running (2005) since it seems relevant
"The rule of nature is that when a species exceeds the carrying capacity of its host environment its food chains collapse and diseases emerge to devastate the population of the threatening organism."

I'll believe it when I see formal studies published outside of Stamets. He's been plugging Agarikon in interviews for at least a couple years now purporting it's a cure-all age defying super fungus that can beat cancer, etc etc. His (not always accurate) contributions to mycology are undoubtable but his reputation as a scientist and seller of supplements is... Iffy.

:whathesaid:

I would look to other sources than Stamets for information on the usefulness of any medicinal mushrooms.

As far as the mushroom in question...

Hehe, I wonder, why would Paul say something like that?

You could say that about pretty much any of the other well-known and used medicinal mushrooms.  Reishi, Chaga, Turkey tail, the list goes on.  I'm sure the Agarikon has it's value, but I really don't think it's anything special over any of the others.

Most of the mushrooms' value against something like the Coronavirus I think is gonna be found in strengthening the body's immune system and overall health in general.

But who knows?

Do you have any recommendations for sources outside of Stamets? I haven't had much exposure to medicinal mushrooms outside of him and would like to get a more well-rounded viewpoint on the subject.

I like Christopher Hobbs a lot.

Also The Fungal Pharmacy by Robert Rogers is probably the best source out there, it really goes into depth and cites a ton of studies.

Did you ever find any more information regarding this?  As far as I'm aware, there's no other information on the internet regarding this topic.

On a side note, would you happen to know how to grow agarikon?  I'm really struggling to find a source on how to grow

In that other thread you bumped they discussed how it was pretty near impossible, and not really worth it to try and grow this mushroom.

You could get a culture and grow the mycelium for consumption, that's probably the best shot you're gonna have.
