I always cut with a knife and leave stumps, it's never caused my sub to mold.
I find I actually get better pinsets from leaving the stumps. They're just mycelium

I got an Opinel 8 mushroom knife recently, harvesting my first flush ever and it is really handy. Brush all that dirt off and slice any grown-in coir.

At first I thought it was a waste, was $30, maybe it is and is more appropriate for mushroom picking outdoors but it is still quite handy.

It's nice to have a dedicated tool, makes the job of harvesting a pleasant time rather than toil, and that goes for a lot of activities

Funny you posted this. Last few days I’ve been designing a blade that is for cultivators rather than foragers. Will hopefully have a prototype in the next week to post and get feedback.

Pretty sure this is outdated thinking. Stumps shouldn’t be any more/less prone to contamination than any other mycelium in whatever form in the tub.

U can do either. If your scisors are dirty theyl contaminate every shroom they cut.  Try wiping em with iso between tubs if  theres trich in one.  I pluck and cut.  Early mature fruits get plucked and the rest get cut cause its easiest for me

I agree with getting better pinsets from leaving stumps unless using a really thick toplayer so it isnt disturbed as much when plu king

So I think some of my contam troubles recently have been related to these cheap ass fake blue cap media bottles of Amazon. They leak, and the reviews back me up I just read. Bouta order a bunch of 500ml bottles from USA lab. So much time and effort wasted on these POS.

lol yeah I have the same problem with the 3 for 15 media bottles caps. Out of six only one works for sure. I lost a bunch of plates with good cultures cuz the agar exploded with bacteria a few days after making and using 40 plates. Couple lcs too but that’s not a big deal.

The actual bottles work fine if you use the better caps on them.

Thanks. I actually don’t take my cultures that far on plates, as soon as it’s clean I usually drop them. Whole lotta t1 and t2s. I’ve changed my mind though with clones. I like to go at least t3 and grow it before deciding to keep it. I had a couple change drastically from t1 to t3 but then seemed to stay the same.

I love my one piece lids, no more trying to pry the lid off or flipping it and it sliding around.

lol yeah people are all over on these.

You don’t add an sfd or anything under it right?

I just threw 7 no prep wbs jars in a minute ago as a test. Screwed the lids on then loosened them a tiny bit.

I’ll probably end up cling wrapping five and leaving two as is to see what happens. So nice to not need foil for the pc too.

I’m not trying to be a dick but, spores are sticky and tend to fall downwards. Even with the non sealing white plastic lids, the odds of a mold spore blowing up under the rim of the lid, navigating the threads, then sliding past the jar rim and into the grain, are fucking remote. If you’re worried about such possibilities I would try to just store the jars in a tote or something to keep the air still and sporeload down.

Remove your seals and you dont have to worry about prying jar lids off or
flipped lids sliding around.

I use all my lids seal side down as per this tek
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26498354

Takes a few minutes, sure, but I did all my lids at once. I have no issues
doing lids like the above link shows and I've had some of the same lids for years
and years.

No mine are made with standard SFD rtv'd to the top. Hopefully they work out, eats doesn't seem to have a problem with them but I'm not sure if he wraps them or not.

@pasty yeah I think my issue was probably due to warping over time causing improper contact on the threads thereby removing the effect of the threads to prevent spores from entering.

If I was doing g2g with mixed lids on the receiving jars the old white ones had ~50% failure due to trich. The jars with leak proof ball lids had zero trich. This was done over the course of three rounds of g2g, the third set of failures caused me to conclude that the issue lay in those white lids so I stopped using them.

The white lids were far from new though so I think they were pulling away from the threads.

I’ve ran lids hundreds of times, many were warped. Never had an issue with contams via the threads. Filter fails were more common. I’ve lost more to SFD fails than the lids.

Hmm, I concede that my interpretation of the results were likely flawed. I did not consider the filters, even if there was improper contact the contamination would still have to get up and over the lip:thumbup:

First attempt at a 3d printed lid- it's a little warped from bad bed adhesion or an improperly leveled bed, so I'm printing another right now after (as far as I can tell) fixing what the problem was.

Bonus: It glows in the dark!

Still gotta try them in the pressure cooker, but I wanted one that's not warped before I do that- only work with one variable at a time, yeah? :P

Do you use the whole filter or just little bit glued to top?
