anyone know anything about mopeds 1

I'm thinking about buying a moped. I was set on a 50cc but after looking up ways to make a 50cc faster it seems like even with those mods it's hard to get up to 60mph which is what I'm looking for.
So now I'm thinking about a 125cc... looking for opinions from anyone who's experienced in these things. Never owned anything motorized on two wheels before.

Check out a Taiwanese brand called Genuine Buddy. Totally solid inexpensive little scooter and you can get them up to 200cc I believe. Or if you want a bobber that's 1/3 scale and have some mechanical know how check out kikker 5150. Kinda of goofy but I be damned if I don't think they are neat little bikes.

Much better off just getting a 250cc bike imo. Something where you can keep up with traffic, use the highway if needed and have enough noise/maneuverability that you're not as much of a sitting duck for the texters.

I've had 12 motorbikes over my whole life, you should get a light weight 1980's - 90's Japanese 250cc enduro / dual sport. Street legal and off road. Don't spend more than 2k if it's in very proper condition. You can spend as little as 500 bucks if you're able to work on it but that takes some extra money and skill and definitely some frustration but it's better in the long run to go through the frustration of learning how to maintain every tiny corner of your bike so you have true independence with your motorbike. Otherwise, when it breaks down you'll be stranded and fucked.
If you PM me some Craigslist results in your area I'll help you select one, I have insane experience buying Craigslist motorcycles

2nd that. Japanese bikes from the 70s and 80s are amazing machines. And perfect blank canvases for customizing. This was my 1978 cb750 or what's left of it.

Def go for a 125cc atleast. Not sure if Goped is still around. Anything less is more of a putt putter for getting around busy cities. Think they even make little intake/exhaust, and even turbos for them.

Thanks! Not mine anymore but it was a fun project. To OP jap bikes are cheap to buy and relitively easy to repair unless you need a new carb. Unless your set on the moped/scooter I would highly recommend a small old jap bike to start out with. But the scooters I recommended are ones I would totally buy.

What kind of traffic conditions do you encounter and speeds are you intending to reach safely and comfortably? That Yamaha looks as good as any scoots out there. And with a name like that parts and service are no doubt in good supply.

This is my previous bike

250CC motard. Literally the best bike I ever rode for city commuting. It does highways too but at 70mph it gets kinda drifty
The power of a 250 is not that intimidating. You can act pretty crazy without going too fast. Having a bit of extra go is safer imo. You want power to move away from dangers and race out in front of the cars at traffic lights
Get something that lets you sit up high to have an good view of the traffic situation. Also light and nimble
Cant go wrong with anything Honda

I live in a very remote area. 20 min drive at 55mph to nearest town. Got a lot of cool nature spots though closer. Not a lot of traffic. I think id be happy with something that maxed out at 60mph i dont really want to go any faster than that.

Bikes are like cars, riding something at nearly max power is not a good feeling
Get something with a bit more power and you can ride it at lower revs. Way chiller and better for the engine

Yeah if your wanting to push a motor at 55mph sustained I'd say go for 250cc at least. Mopeds and scooters are amazing for urban areas with low speeds. They are super neat and the retro look of an old vespa is a thing of beauty. For your needs I'd say go with a small crotch rocket or a scrambler.

Honestly you should just buy a small displacement motorcycle. Maybe like a 250 Ninja. I know that sounds like it’s going to kill you but they have significant advantages over mopeds/scooters. Larger tires and better brakes means they are actually a good bit easier to ride at speed. And Ninja’s are like a dime a dozen and a lot less stylish, so they go for cheap. I own quite a few motorcycles as well as one scooter. The scooter is the worst bike I own. Also, most states offer very nice motorcycle training classes. Take advantage of those no matter the two wheeler you ride, it will teach you a lot.

Electric bikes are ridiculously fast. No shifting, and instant power, it's amazing.
Check out dealerships in your area, and see if they do test rides. I had a chance to check these out on a demo day.

Those big bore smokers are a riot. I have a 350 and it absolutely shreds. Wheelies everywhere! They scare babies, and I love it!

Most of the rest of the world, and any driver/rider of significant skill, has a very different perspective on this. Automatic shifting is lazy, not skillful.

The Widowmaker! Fuck yeah dude, absolutely brutal! Pure power, no handling! I have an RD350, a spot less brute force, way more brakes and chassis. I also have a 120hp Suzuki GT750 (water cooled 3 cylinder). It's a terrifying road racer. The power doesn't stop until you realize the bike won't stop in time.

GT750 had horrible brakes I used to put them together out of the crate and scorch them on the Houston freeways when i was 15 years old The first year models did not have disc brakes and the shoe brakes up front would fade into nothing after several stops Damn those bikes were dangerous

LOL stopping that thing on a drum brake does not look like fun.
Looks like it weighs as much as a small horse and carriage.

Stock they are 70hp. They were basically long distance cruisers, maybe the best 2t cruiser ever made.
I machined new heads, did cylinders, my father fabricated pipes, we put an electronic ignition on, and giant carbs. The bike is basically too much for itself. I did build a very nice custom transmission part that is a nice seller for me (not going to disclose for the sake outing myself), but the GT750 is a real runner if you are dumb enough to try.

Heavy as fuck for the HP they made stock. Not even remotely fast, but the GT750 set the top speed record at Daytona in 1970 (don't quote me on the that year I could be a few off) and almost won the race if it wasn't for them blowing tires on the banking. The bikes have loads of potential, but they were perhaps a bit before their time. As we know, water cooled two strokes are the epitome of fast road racing bikes.

I got upgraded to a Jeep for my rental for the next two months:

Having now experienced the local icons of a couple of Harley's, a Dodge Challenger, and now this, I feel quite confident in saying that the vehicles that have such massive popularity/status over here are, for the most part, all show and no go. They tend to do one thing well IME, and that's feel good at mid speed/mid revs.
I find it quite bizarre, but also kinda not.

Meh. I'm not complaining at all.
I just really, really, really wish I had the prerequisites in place here to get me a motorbike here.
I might even stump up for one of those mini moto/pit bikes before the summer ends to take out to a nice strip I know just to get the rush of being on two wheels into my system.
I also quite fancy having something for the dog to chase me on...

Jesus, I don't know if I could decide between the following for my next bike right now. Need to see where in the world/in life I land next...
1. CR500 Supermoto

2. 2020 CBR1000RR-R

3. Whichever year R1 takes my fancy (as long as it has the Crossplane engine)

Yeah i am pretty shure you can I rode a early `70s SC 500 when i was a kid, it was ridiculous Only had a 4 speed tranny and it would easily loft the front wheel in 3rd gear And i did not even have it "on the pipe" I never got the balls to shift it in 4th gear https://silodrome.com/yamaha-sc500/

I met the owner of Silodrome back before it got popular. He seems like a smart dude. He really turned that upscale blog space into something you make money off of. When I was building my RD I did a fair number of posts about it on my site and was drawing quite a bit of attention, but I never quite pulled off an article on his site. That would have been cool though.
I love those big air cooled smokers. Check out the BRC big bore conversions for modern 250's (KTMs). Absolute monsters. I actually know the owner of BRC as I lived in Alberta (though I met him in Oklahoma doing other motor sport stuff), but he builds some crazy motors. I tried to buy an inline 250 off of him but it was going to be like $6k just for the motor and I'd still have to get a controller for the electronic power valves. But he claimed 112hp out of 250cc's.

I used to work at a motorcycle shop and have seen and worked on a lot of bikes and mopeds, the thing you're gonna want to remember is that mopeds ARE great for what they are if you can find one cheap, but if you have to go over 45 mph on them you can count me out, the tires are tiny and if i have to stop suddenly I always feel like I'm gonna slide.
Everyone has their own advice and feelings, but I would strongly suggest that you go with a cheap 250cc bike, they're light as a feather and can handle some highway usage. working on them is easy, change the oil and filter, spark plugs, and air filter and you're basically set as long as the bike is in good shape and hasn't been abused.
A clutch isn't that scary, I actually feel safer with it, its my "oh shit" lever! Remember, if you're already talking about doing mods to a moped, you're gonna give yourself a headache trying to eek out more power and you'll lose the cheap insurance and registration fees, just buy a bike. And for the love of god take a MSF course, it'll teach you how to go from literally no riding experience to being proficient at slow speed maneuvers which are the ones that are the basis of a good rider.
Try and find a friend who has a small dirt bike or small motorcycle they would teach you how to ride on and go out to a dirt road, backyard, or empty parking lot and learn how to use the clutch, go up and down gears, and brake before you take the MSF course and you'll be way ahead of most people and will be able to focus on upping your proficiency instead of just learning how to keep the bike upright.

This is precisely why I recommended an EX250. I have crashed my scooter more times than I care to count. It's a shitty little motorcycle and it only goes 35mph. The brakes suck, the suspension sucks, and besides the fuel mileage the only interesting thing about it is that you can put groceries under the seat. It's a pathetic existence really. An EX250 (Ninja) is five times the bike for 20% more money. Also, the MSF course (as I already mentioned) is truly awesome. If you buy a bike OP, do the MSF course! You have at least two recommendations in this thread already.

Is it one of the leaning ones? Those are kind of slick.
Don't buy a Chinese piece of junk as a primary mode of transport. Go look up EX250's, find your nut sack, and purchase a decent motorcycle that will get you through just about anything.

Whatever you go with, a MSF certified riders course is a great first step. No matter how many years you have on the road they will teach you skills that can save your life. Money well spent and you'll be a safer and more confident rider when you're done. Most states also will count it as your riding exam.

The Ducth motomag tested those and they were actually quite impressed with handling. The double front means you have insane grip and can roll over just about nything slippery and/or bumpy without issues
Your legs get mad spray from the wheels being that far out though. And at least here in Euro land you will always be that guy that didnt get his license and had to settle for one of these
This is my current bike. Coming off a 250moto this has some nice pull and weight for freeway riding

Not the best commuter to be honest (pegs are super wide) but just cruising around its super nice. Starting it up still puts a smile on my face Im kinda debating doing the whole cruiser thing. I always had a soft spot for Harleys.
The fact that JSB hates them after riding a few is really rustling my jimmies as I value his opinion on matters of two-wheeled transportation

They lock out too, so you can only lean so far.
It's a trade off I guess. You don't have to worry as much about going down on a patch of leaves on a curve, but you also can't lean in to get out of trouble.

If you care not about quality engineering and performance, then they're great cruisers. Doubt that there's many bikes that are as comfortable out there..
Personally, those two things are what I value most in a machine I love, which is why Harley is out of the question for me.
Definitely worth a try though, who knows, you might fall in love with them as so many do...

I was just thinking, strong motorbike preferences are strongly linked to personality and your general style of an active life, i think.
You JSB seem to preference for optimal racing level engineered performance bikes, im sure that coincides with your personality/energy of living life to the fullest, being most extroverted, and high caliber.
Me i like oldschool archaic dualsport engineering for reliability and adventerous versatility and ease of access & inexpensiveness. That definitely mirrors my whole personality /character for an addiction to freedom to go wherever i want, do whatever i want, whenever i want. Thats what matters most to me.
Tripsurfer likes brubruburbrubrub chill crusing bikes. He also likes surfing. Hes all about the chilled out relaxing aspecs of an active life, surfing is like that too i think.

Well you both are right I guess but I care deeply about quality engineering too
Thats why I always buy Honda's. Im an engineer myself for fucks sake
I think part of Harleys appeal is similar to what I like about steam locomotives. They are just so mechanical and enginey (is that even a word) Also overpriced and kinda gay in some way. The Harley crowd here in Europe at least is mostly trying to be bad-asses mid-life crisis dudes.

friend texts me the other day... "just saw a truck smoke a guy on a moped...you're not getting one"
Still haven't made up my mind on what I wanna get. Might wait till next summer at this point.
Dunno what happened to the aforementioned moped victim though..guess he was taken to the hospital in a wambulance and everything. Hopefully he is alright.

You can always go Quadrophenia style and pick up an older Vespa or Lambretta. Decent ones can be had for pretty cheap. I'm doing a '64 Vespa for a friend right now. Simple as can be to restore.
