Colonised BRF Monotub Grow - Cakes or Crumble?
    #26816550 - 07/11/20 05:13 AM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Hello all,

I am setting up for my first grow and couldn’t be more excited!!

Anyways, I have some Cubans’ syringes on the way, some Pre Sterilized BRF (PF Tek) Vermiculite Jars (6) and a 90L monotub set up and waiting.

I really need some advice once the jars are colonised. Will I get better results:

a) sitting the cakes on foil inside the mono tub with some perlite a few inches apart; or

b) crumble the cakes and lay layers with with some vermiculite and case with some peat?

Is either method safer (For a beginner) or more appropriate? Or most importantly which will produce best results?

Thank you in advance for any information or tips.

Cheers,
L1

c)  use cheese grater on cakes

will colonize super fast that way

Hey the safest way would be fruiting them individually instead of mixing into a large substrate.
Some say that mixing to bulk will produce more yeild and some say it makes no diffrence because we're not changing the ammount of nutrients it has available with either method.

The PF tek is much better for a beginner but if you feel confident you could make shoeboxes. I just wouldnt mix all of the spawn together in one tub... As they are from MS syringes and spores tend to be contaminated and then you mix all those contams into a single tub.

That would be an exception.
But adds more risk and takes away the simplicity of PF tek or shoebox teks with coir+vermiculite.

Full cakes. Pack them in touching eachother. An inch of bulk on the bottom and a quarter inch of "casing" on top. Breaking them up works but casing whole cakes is a far superior method.

Yeah I did this my first grow with 5 cakes. Worked well. I thought they would colonize the coir more, but they didn't at all. Just started fruiting immediately. Proceeded to get 3-4 flushes with the first being the biggest.
I don't think grating or crumbling the cakes to make them colonize the coir is worth it for brf cakes, because there is less nutes for the mycelium there than in whole grains. Therefore too much energy might be used for the colonization. Better to use all the nutes for fruits
1/2 inch top and bottom layer on the cakes and you are good.
I don't know if the dunking in water for 24hrs is good in this way of fruiting them. I didn't do it. Just kept the coir moist. Maybe dunk is good to get more moisture inside the cakes too, but it is good to remember that the cakes won't lose water to evaporation inside the coir.

that's a great point

I use cow shit tho... so plenty of nutes in there.  Don't know why more people don't use manure

I actually used plant fertilizer on coir my last shoebox and it seemed to have slightly accelerated the colonization. I was careful and used a bit less than recommended for plants and like 10 sprays on the coir after hydration already.

Manure just takes a little more work without adding much if anything for cubes. You have to properly pasteurize but besides that you have to procure it. I used Hpoo for a while because we had wild horses nearby but then you can only use it at a certain stage and all the rest I had to leave in a pile outback for it to age. It was free but required a lot more time than just buying a few bricks of coir for super cheap and dumping some boiling water on them.

To the OP, 6 half pints only makes 1.5 qt of spawn so that's no where near enough for doing a 90l tub. You'd want 6-7 qts at least for one of that size. 66qt are as big as I like to go for monos. You could do a shoe box with those for sure but fruiting BRF cakes as cakes is probably the best bet for your 1st grow.

While those are growing I'd read up on https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26009662 and the list of teks https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24144021 and order some agar supplies if you want to really continue growing.
