Issues with 2nd flush bottom pins
    #26816354 - 07/11/20 01:05 AM (3 years, 6 months ago)

After having done about 12, 54 quart unmodified mono tubs, I continuously am running into bottom pinning on the second flush, and sometimes pins on both top and bottom. I have been dunking all of my subs after my first flushes as i usually get a pretty heavy pin set, but when i do i just let the sub float and don't fully submerge it because i leave stumps behind like in Bod's harvest tek.

Are stumps ok to be submerged? Will they not water log and rot?

Another issue that arises from not fully submerging is i end up having to spray the surface multiple times to try and make the surface conditions more ideal than the bottom, but I find with extra misting the water will bead up and run down the sides of the tub and pool on the bottom, which ends up being counter productive and making the bottom side the better climate regardless. Having liners for the first flush remedies this run down issue by keeping the pooled water separate from the sub, but obviously I have to remove the liner for good when i dunk. I'm out of ideas as how to fix this problem.

*As a side note: Because i am still doing ms grows, i tend to let them mature a bit to allow most of the mushrooms to develop, and some end up dropping some spores on the sub. I have recently become aware that this may cause issues with future pin sets, so this could very well be compounding my issues.

I find I don't really need to dunk. I don't usually bother with more than two flushes but even if I do my subs rarely need it.
The only time I might dunk after the first flush is if the flush was particularly heavy or the sub got really dry.
Between flushes I just give a heavy misting or bottom water a little.

Stumps can be submerged yes that's fine.
Not much you can do about bottom pins, if you are getting good pinsets on top just consider them a bonus.
They are usually all flat and soggy and deformed.

If you want to harvest the bottom after first flush,  after you harvest the top + drain the tub, you can cut a piece of real stiff cardboard the same size of your sub and hold it tight against your sub while you flip the tub + slowly lower it down.

Hope that makes sense. What did you mean about letting the fruits mature because it's MS? Is it for spore printing?

Yea ill usually put another empty tub inside the one im harvesting and turn it upside down to expose the bottom fruits, so i know what you're saying with the cardboard, which is also a good idea. I've managed to dial in my first flushes enough that I dont run into bottoms pins until the second flush.

With MS, some fruits will mature before others have even broken their veils, so I will wait until the smaller ones have a bit of a chance to catch up, but this means a few of the larger ones will start to sporulate before i harvest.

I also don’t dunk unless I’m going for a third flush.

It can be tough to keep pinning on top after a big flush, seems like no matter what the surface gets pretty beat up looking and doesn’t hold water the same. I get a decent amount of side pins after the first flush when there’s lots of space from the sub shrinking.

I understand side pins are unavoidable after flush 1. Getting bottom pins on the 2nd creates stumps on both sides of the sub, which will cause the bottom side to rot. Ive had a couple of nice 2nd flushes with massive fruits on subs that had to be flipped, I'd like to be able to keep my subs producing decently while there is still no contamination and plenty of nutrients left. Constantly flipping and having pins form wherever they please is hurting yields.

Stumps on the bottom should not rot, same as the stumps on top don't rot. The stumps are just mycelium. The sub doesn't rot on the bottom because of water.
