Muhammad Ali refused to be drafted because of religious reasons and because he said he had no quarrel with the Viet Cong. He was sentenced to 5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. He appealed the sentence. Several websites say he served no time and one I read said he served about 7 weeks. He was banned from boxing for 3 years.

Wow, somehow I never heard of the guy. Yes, much respect.
-------------------- I am in a minority on the shroomery, as I frequently defend the opposing side when they have a point about something or when my side make believes something about them. I also attack my side if I think they're wrong. People here get very confused by that and think it means I prefer the other side.

There was a 1970 movie called The Great White Hope. James Earl Jones played Jack Jefferson, who was based on Jack Johnson. The great white hope referred to the search for a white boxer who could beat him.

I'd not heard of Jack Johnson either, but I know his name now.
Ali. Like what can anyone say that does him justice. The prettiest. The most beautiful. The baddest. THE Champ.

When Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists in protest at the 200 mtr Olympics medal ceremony in Mexico City, Australian Peter Norman, who ran second, was the other guy on the podium. The 3 of them hatched the plan to stage the protest before the ceremony and his choice to wear a badge supporting his fellow athletes cost him his career. The Australian government offered Norman a posthumous apology in 2012. Tommie Smith and John Carlos were pall bearers at his funeral. His time of 20.06 still stands as the Australian 200 mtr record after more than 50 years.
