Grain jar lids
    #26814749 - 07/10/20 10:03 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

Howdy again. Things have been going pretty swell. I just picked my last flush off of my last shoebox. It was 1 mushroom. 41.8 wet, 5.2g dried, cap is 1.8g itself. I'll attach a photo or two. I don't know how big is big, but I was impressed, even though it was the only one to pop up. Lol.

On to the reason of my post! I've been using half pint jars heretofor. I just spawned 5 more shoeboxes (first time pcorn, no pc/no contamination, to coir), and while those are colonizing, I'm going to switch again to WBS, as I've read its smaller grains provide more inoculation points and its just overall easier to use. The WBS is soaking now. Tomorrow I'll simmer and sterilize it in jars, inside an Instapot (i know this is not optimal, but i do not own a pc nor can i afford one - and out local thrift stores never seem to have any) so any input regarding the sterilization process without a PC would be appreciated.

I went and purchased a dozen quart sized wide mouth canning jars, and now I want to get my lids made, but I am curious as to what my options are. The local post office is right down the street so I reckon I could go get an envelop or two and use that, but are there any other options? My PF tek jars (i also colonized my pcorn in them) didnt have a gas exchange hole. Just two holes with silicone over them to insert my syringe into. My understanding is that grain jars need gas exchange, or their growth slows down after a certain point? Is that correct? Any advice here would be appreciated. I would like for them to be ready before I sterilize tomorrow.

Thank you!

Sorry no size comparison after dehydrating! My hands aren't super large but I'm a large man if it helps any!

I’d make extra sure that beast is all the way dry before storing...unless you’re gonna eat the whole thing tonight:awesomenod:

Sfd are the best bet for efficacy and longevity. They cost about a buck a piece and you can get 7 filters out of each of you trace a quarter on one and cut them out.

Tyvek seems flimsy to me but people do use it.

Poly fill I have also used and it’s super cheap. An old pillow or a bag that’s a few bucks will make tons of jar lids. Just make sure to really get that shit tight like a tiger before pulling it through the hole.

You have hands on polyfill?

1/4" hole in the middle of the lid,
and fill it really tight.

EDIT: Too slow

Brad point bits make clean holes, metal bits are good too. I like to use a triple layer of micropore tape that I'll replace every few PC cycles. SFD's are more permanent, tyvek covered with MP is also a pretty popular option.

I used tyvek for a long time, then just stopped... it hasn't seemed to make any difference at all after years.  Anecdotal but waste of money for me so far.

The options for filter material that I've seen on here are Polyfill, Tyvek, Micropore tape, and Synthetic Filter Disks

I've read that SFDs have the smallest pore sizes and thus are the most resistant to contams, so that's why I went with those. They are a wee bit harder to find (and pricier) than the others, though. I purchased mine online on Amazon. For SFDs you also need to buy an adhesive to glue them onto the lids. I've never seen anyone use anything other than red RTV silicone for this purpose. It can withstand multiple PC cycles

Polyfill you would just need to stuff into the hole, no adhesive required. Micropore tape obviously has its own adhesive, but I'm not sure how viable this material is for grain jars

I don't know much about Tyvek, other than you can get it for free at the post office

I have no complaints with my SFDs so far. I don't use whole ones since I'm too cheap for that, I'll cut one SFD into about 8-9 little circles and glue them onto the lid. A bit of extra work, but it seems worth it. I've only had about 1/24 grain jars go bad, and that one was surely because I got too cute with my techniques. I dropped an entire agar cup into one grain jar and then did a G2G transfer (with colonized agar still in there) onto a big

I don’t even use filtered lids anymore. Old school unmodded is my jam now. Literally take the lid out of the box and put it on the jar. That’s it.

Nice! I've seen these at Wal-Mart for pretty cheap. And I'm a big admirer of your TEKs so I'll give this one a try. Thanks!

I do have polyfill on hand actually. So I just make a.. what, half inch hole or so in the lid and stuff some poly in so that it's tight? And this means that I don't have to go get any tyvek envelopes from the post office, yes? I can also put this in the instapot or steam sterilize it like I have been too, yes?

Half inch is too much. 1/4" you should do.

I started using these a few years ago after reading this post. No holes, no filter, no rust, clean, colonizes just as fast. I'll never use anything else.

What if he has 2-piece lids?
Would it work unmodded?

I do have 2 piece lids, lol. I was going to puncture a hole the old fashioned way with a hammer and nail, same way I did my pf tek lids. Or I also have a drill and some bits somewhere I think.

1 hole or two? I am not yet to working with agar. I have grains I can transfer with already though, plus a syringe.
